In brief

You insure a Cupra as a passenger car. Third-party liability is compulsory under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM), and alongside it you choose third-party, fire and theft or comprehensive cover. What is different with this badge is the rating group: it follows the power and performance of the version, not the model name on the tailgate.

As a result a Leon, a Formentor and a Formentor VZ produce three different premiums. So never ask for a premium at make level but by version, year of manufacture and power; the comparison with the broadly built range of a volume make does not hold here.

Alongside petrol models, Cupra also supplies plug-in hybrids and the fully electric Born. On those versions repair runs through a workshop trained for high-voltage systems, which limits the number of suitable repairers and lengthens the repair time.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The rating group follows the power, not the model name

Insurers classify a car by weight, power and list price. Because Cupra uses the same body as the base model but with a more powerful engine, the car falls higher in that classification than its appearance suggests. A quote that names only the make therefore says nothing. When you apply, give the type number and the engine power, and if in doubt ask for a premium on two candidate versions side by side.

Large wheels and low-profile tyres are a claims item of their own

The sportier versions have larger wheels with a low tyre profile. Kerb damage, a damaged wheel rim or a tyre ruined in a pothole does not count as an external mishap within the meaning of own-damage cover. Without a collision the insurer does not pay for it. A cracked spoiler or a damaged diffuser when driving up a ramp usually falls outside it as well.

Track days and speed events fall outside the policy

These cars are taken to a track day more often than average. Practically every car policy excludes taking part in competitions, speed events and driving on a circuit, even where it is a private instruction day. Article 7:952 DCC moreover allows the insurer to refuse damage caused by recklessness. If you want to go on track, arrange separate day cover with the organiser in advance.

More power than the registration document states

A software increase in power, a sports exhaust or a different turbo changes the risk on which the premium was calculated. The duty of disclosure on entering into the insurance is set out in Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code; what the insurer may do in the event of an incorrect declaration is set out in 7:930 DCC. An undeclared increase in power can lead to a lower payout or a refusal when you claim.

Your no-claims years are held in Roy-data

You build up no-claims years for each year without an at-fault claim, and you usually lose five at once when a claim is paid. They are registered in Roy-data, the central system of Dutch insurers, and therefore transfer automatically to a new insurer. With most insurers, glass damage does not count.

Car insurance

Work out whether claiming pays

With an at-fault claim you usually lose five no-claims years and your premium rises for years, because you then climb back up step by step. For a small claim, paying yourself can be cheaper. Always ask for a damage assessment before you finalise a claim.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Engine power and rating group. Decisive with this badge: the sporting version is rated higher than the base model with the same shell.
  • Version and year of manufacture. Within one model name the classification differs by engine and equipment level.
  • Drivetrain. Petrol, plug-in hybrid or fully electric. That also determines the repair network.
  • Age of the regular driver. On a car with this power, a driver under 24 counts heavily towards acceptance.
  • No-claims years. Your position on the bonus-malus ladder remains the heaviest factor here too.
  • Storage address. Where the car is kept at night, and whether that is a garage or the public road.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is a Cupra more expensive to insure than the Seat model it is based on?

Usually yes. Not because the make has a different name, but because the power and the list price are higher and the car therefore falls into a different rating group. The difference arises at version level: ask for a premium on the type number, not on the model name.

May I do a track day with my Cupra?

You may drive, but you are not insured while doing so. Competitions, speed events and driving on a circuit are excluded under practically every car policy, including a private instruction day without timing. Organisers offer separate cover for those days; arrange it in advance and not at the gate.

What happens if I have the power increased?

That is a change in the risk and you have to report it. If you do not, the insurer can rely on Articles 7:928 and 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code when you claim and reduce or refuse the payout. Report a sports exhaust or modified suspension as well.

What is arranged differently on the electric Born?

The battery pack is insured for damage from a covered cause, such as a collision or fire. Loss of capacity through normal use is not included. That is a warranty matter. Repair runs through a workshop certified for high-voltage systems, which can lengthen the turnaround time.
