Insuring a car with a G3 LPG system

For your insurer a G3 installation is not a question of premium but of registration: it has to know the installation is fitted, and that the inspection is current.

In brief

The G3 is the modern version of the LPG installation, with an electronically controlled valve that shuts off the gas supply when the engine stops. Insurers therefore assess the fire risk differently from the older G1 and G2 versions. On an inspected G3 the difference is limited.

What does go wrong is the paperwork. An installation fitted after the policy was taken out does not appear on the policy schedule. In a fire or explosion claim that is the first thing looked at. Report the installation, with the type of installation and the inspection certificate.

The installation also has its own inspection period, separate from the MOT. An expired inspection and damage connected with it is a combination you do not want to find yourself in.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Report the installation, including where it is fitted later

On taking out the policy, the duty of disclosure applies under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code; what an insurer may do where a declaration is incorrect or incomplete is set out in 7:930 DCC. An installation fitted during the term you report under the change-of-risk provision in your conditions. State which type it is and enclose the inspection certificate. That is one message and it avoids the whole argument.

The inspection of the tank and installation is separate from the MOT

The tank and the installation have their own inspection period with their own expiry date. If it expires, the vehicle is defective on that point, and in a fire or leakage claim connected with it the insurer can rely on that. The MOT date says nothing about this. Put the installation's inspection date separately in your diary and keep the inspection report with the vehicle papers.

Have it fitted by a recognised firm and keep the evidence

An improperly fitted installation is a defect that can lead to complete refusal in the event of fire. If the fitting was demonstrably done wrongly, the installer is liable for that under Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code; without an invoice, fitting report and inspection certificate you go into that conversation empty-handed. Working on the gas line or the vaporiser yourself is an exclusion on virtually every policy.

Where you cannot go with LPG

Many underground car parks refuse vehicles running on LPG, and restrictions apply on some ferries and in a few tunnels. That does not affect your cover directly, but it does determine where the car stands at night, and that in turn counts in the premium. With a G3 installation the restrictions are usually less strict than with the older types; check per location.

The inspection is periodic

The installation and the tank have their own inspection period, separate from the MOT. An expired inspection is a defect in the vehicle. In a claim connected with it the insurer can rely on that. Put the date in the same diary as the MOT.

Your no-claims years are held in Roy-data

You build up no-claims years for each year without an at-fault claim, and you usually lose five at once when a claim is paid. They are registered in Roy-data, the central system of Dutch insurers, and therefore transfer automatically to a new insurer. With most insurers, glass damage does not count.

Car insurance

Work out whether claiming pays

With an at-fault claim you usually lose five no-claims years and your premium rises for years, because you then climb back up step by step. For a small claim, paying yourself can be cheaper. Always ask for a damage assessment before you finalise a claim.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Type of installation. G1, G2 or G3; the type determines how the fire risk is assessed.
  • Inspection status. A valid inspection of the tank and installation is an underwriting condition on this subject.
  • Fitted at the factory or later. Where it is fitted later, who carried out the work and whether that was recorded counts.
  • Storage location. Because many car parks refuse LPG, the car stands outside more often; that counts.
  • Cover and excess: third-party liability, third-party, fire and theft, or comprehensive, and the excess you choose with it.
  • No-claims years. Your position on the bonus-malus ladder remains the heaviest factor here too.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Do I have to declare a G3 installation to my insurer?

Yes, including where it was only fitted after the policy was taken out. It is a change to the vehicle and to the risk. Provide the type of installation and enclose the inspection certificate. Without that declaration the insurer can rely after a claim on Articles 7:928 and 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code.

What happens if the tank's inspection has expired?

The vehicle is then defective on that point. If damage connected with the installation arises, for instance fire or a gas leak, the insurer can refuse payment. The installation's inspection period is separate from the MOT and therefore does not appear automatically at your MOT appointment.

Is fire damage from the installation covered?

Fire is a covered cause under third-party, fire and theft and comprehensive, provided the installation has been declared, inspected and fitted by a recognised firm. If any one of those three is missing, that becomes the subject of discussion during claims handling. Modifications to the gas line carried out yourself are almost always excluded.

What is different about a G3 compared with a G1 or G2?

The G3 shuts off the gas supply electronically as soon as the engine stops. That is assessed as safer than the older versions, which works through into underwriting and into the restrictions car parks and ferries apply. For the duty to declare, the type makes no difference: you report every installation.
