In brief

Because of its low weight and modest power, a Smart usually falls into a favourable rating group. That mainly brings the third-party liability premium down. The place where the car stands weighs more heavily on this model than on most others, however: urban parking on the public road increases the chance of parking damage and vandalism.

On top of that, the market value of an older Smart falls quickly. The question is therefore not which cover includes the most, but from what point own-damage cover no longer outweighs what you would actually get back on a total loss.

If you drive a Smart as a second car with a low annual mileage, declare that. It is one of the few factors that works in your favour on this model.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Parking damage by an unknown person is the key question

A dent or a scratch from a passer-by or a driver who moves off is not covered under third-party liability or third-party, fire and theft. Only comprehensive cover pays for it. But a comprehensive claim with no known other party counts as an at-fault claim and usually costs you five no-claims years. On a small claim, first ask for an estimate and set it against the increase in premium over the years that follow.

The market value determines when own-damage cover stops paying off

On a total loss the own-damage cover pays the market value, not what you need to buy back a comparable car. On a compact car that is already a few years old, that value drops quickly. Set the own-damage premium over three years alongside that market value: if they are of the same order, third-party liability with third-party, fire and theft is usually the wiser choice.

A rented battery pack is not on your policy

On the electric versions it used to happen that the battery was not bought but rented. If that is the case with your car, the pack belongs to a third party and falls outside your own-damage cover. The arrangements about damage and replacement are in the rental contract. Even with a battery that has been bought, loss of capacity through use is not insured.

A second car, low mileage and the convertible roof

A Smart is often the second car in a household. Declare the actual annual mileage. An estimate that is too high costs you premium and one that is too low can lead to an argument about your declaration when there is a claim. If you drive a convertible version, bear in mind that wear and discolouration of the fabric roof are not insured. Only slashing through vandalism falls under the own-damage cover.

Your no-claims years are held in Roy-data

You build up no-claims years for each year without an at-fault claim, and you usually lose five at once when a claim is paid. They are registered in Roy-data, the central system of Dutch insurers, and therefore transfer automatically to a new insurer. With most insurers, glass damage does not count.

Car insurance

Work out whether claiming pays

With an at-fault claim you usually lose five no-claims years and your premium rises for years, because you then climb back up step by step. For a small claim, paying yourself can be cheaper. Always ask for a damage assessment before you finalise a claim.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Weight and engine power. Both are low, which on this model usually produces a favourable rating group.
  • Postcode area. With predominantly urban use, the place where the car stands counts heavily.
  • Parking situation. The public road, your own driveway or a locked garage. That affects both theft and parking damage.
  • Annual mileage. Often low where the car is used as a second car, and that works in your favour.
  • Age and market value of the vehicle. Determines whether own-damage cover still outweighs what would be paid on a total loss.
  • No-claims years. The position on the bonus-malus ladder remains decisive even on a light car.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Who pays for parking damage if the person responsible is unknown?

Only comprehensive cover. Third-party liability and third-party, fire and theft do not pay for it. Bear in mind, though, that such a claim with no known other party counts as an at-fault claim and usually costs you five no-claims years. Ask for an estimate first before you make the notification final.

Is own-damage cover still worthwhile on an older Smart?

That depends on the market value. On a total loss you are paid that value and not the price of a replacement car. Set the own-damage premium over three years alongside the current market value. If they are close together, the cover no longer pays for itself financially.

What applies to a rented battery pack?

A rented battery belongs to the company that rents it out and therefore falls outside your own-damage cover. What happens on damage or replacement is set out in the rental contract and not in your policy conditions. When buying a second-hand example, check whether the pack was bought or is rented.

Does a low annual mileage count in the premium?

Yes; insurers ask about it and take it into account. Where the car is used as a second car in town, the mileage is often low, and that works in your favour. Do declare what you actually drive: a figure that is too low can lead to an argument about your declaration when there is a claim.
