In brief

The Model S is the oldest and largest model in the range. Most examples now running in the Netherlands were bought second-hand, often with a good many kilometres and a high-powered specification. That makes the insurance question different from that on a new car: a purchase-price or replacement-value scheme has usually long since expired and the cover calculates with the market value.

That market value is the heart of the problem. The value of an older Model S has fallen considerably, while replacing a battery module, the air suspension or the large central screen has not. One substantial claim therefore quickly exceeds the value and the insurer then pays the value instead of repairing the car.

Do you drive one of the newer models? Then look at car insurance for the Tesla Model Y or at car insurance for the Tesla Model X.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. What does your premium depend on?

  • Market value of the individual car. On an older car the own-damage premium calculates with the current value, not with the price at the time.
  • Trim level and engine power. The fastest variants are accepted by fewer insurers and rated more heavily.
  • Year of manufacture and mileage. Age and kilometres covered help determine whether comprehensive cover is still offered.
  • Origin and claims history. Import, earlier damage or a valuation report affect acceptance and the way the value is established on a claim.
  • Regular driver. The age, driving experience and no-claims years built up by whoever drives the car most.
  • Cover chosen. The step from comprehensive cover to third-party, fire and theft is the biggest premium decision you take on this model.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Market value against repair costs

On an older Model S the value has fallen sharply, but the parts have not. A battery module, an air suspension bag or the central screen soon approaches the value of the whole car. The insurer may then decide not to repair but to pay the market value. New for old is not paid in that case, and parts that were at the end of their life are kept out of the claim as wear.

When third-party, fire and theft is enough

On a car whose value has fallen, comprehensive cover is not a given. Set the annual premium plus the excess alongside what the car would produce on a total loss. Third-party, fire and theft covers fire, theft, storm, broken glass and a collision with an animal, but not a collision you cause and not vandalism. If finance is still running, the lender usually requires comprehensive cover for as long as it is being repaid; that requirement takes precedence over your own assessment.

Power and who is behind the wheel

The fast versions of this model are not accepted by every insurer, and certainly not with a young or inexperienced regular driver. So declare honestly who drives the car. Taking part in speed tests, circuit runs or driver training on a closed track is excluded as standard. Driving under the influence, without a valid licence or while disqualified produces no cover, not even under comprehensive cover.

Imports and unknown history

Some of the used Model S cars have been imported or have already had several owners. Earlier damage, a differing specification or a battery pack that has already been replaced are matters the insurer wants to know about; concealing them goes to the duty of disclosure in Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code and can lead to a reduction on a claim (Article 7:930 DCC). Have the car inspected beforehand and consider a valuation report, so that the value is not in dispute when there is a claim.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Can I still insure an older Model S comprehensively?

Often yes, but not with every insurer. Some companies offer comprehensive cover only up to a certain age of car or ask for a valuation report. If the premium plus the excess no longer outweighs what the car would produce on a total loss, third-party, fire and theft is the logical step, unless finance requires comprehensive cover for as long as it is being repaid.

How is the value established on a total loss?

The expert determines the market value: what a comparable example in the same condition, specification and mileage costs at that moment. If you have had a valuation report drawn up and it is stated on the policy, the valuation figure applies for the agreed period. Without a valuation, the market value established is the starting point and argument afterwards is difficult.

Is a replaced or reconditioned battery pack a problem?

It is above all a matter of declaring it. Report what has been replaced or modified on the car and with which parts. That falls under the duty of disclosure in Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code. Non-original or self-fitted components are not simply paid for when there is a claim, and a pack that has lost capacity is regarded as wear and is never paid for.

May I take this car onto a circuit?

Not under an ordinary car insurance policy. Taking part in competitions, speed tests and runs on a closed circuit is excluded as standard, even where it is a tuition day. Damage to your own car and to other people's then remains at your expense. For those situations there are separate, temporary covers that you have to arrange separately.
