In brief

The Sandero is available with a factory LPG version and is also converted after the event with some regularity. For insurance that is no detail. An LPG system changes the fire class of the vehicle, changes the requirements the car has to meet and changes the details on which the insurer bases its acceptance. That makes the installation a detail that must be declared.

The rule is in Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code: when entering into the insurance you must disclose everything you understand to be relevant to the assessment. If you have the system fitted later, that change must be reported as well. If a fire or other loss occurs and it turns out the system was never declared, the insurer may assess what it would have done had the declaration been correct and reduce or refuse the payout. That follows from Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code.

On top of that the legislation makes requirements of the installation itself: fitting by an approved firm, an entry on the registration document and periodic inspection of the tank.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Fuel type on the registration document. Petrol, LPG or a second fuel lead to a different classification and a different rate.
  • Method of fitting and inspection history. An approved installation with valid inspection certificates is assessed differently from an unknown system.
  • Type of cover chosen. Fire and explosion damage to your own car is only in the cover from third-party, fire and theft upwards.
  • Place of storage and the type of car park. Where the car is kept overnight counts, and with LPG there are access restrictions in some places.
  • Declared annual mileage. Cars running on LPG usually cover a lot of ground, and that is a premium factor in its own right.
  • No-claims years of the driver. On this version too it remains the factor that weighs most heavily in the premium.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Declare the system, even if it was fitted at the factory

Insurers derive the version from the registration, but that only works if the fuel type is correctly recorded there. If the system was fitted later and the registration document has not been amended, the basis of your policy is wrong. Report the change in writing and keep the confirmation. That is not only a formality in the event of fire, but also in a collision in which the tank is involved.

Approved fitting and inspection determine whether you keep cover

The system should have been fitted by an approved firm and the tank has to be inspected periodically. If the inspection period has expired or the gas system has been worked on privately, the insurer can argue after a fire or explosion that the damage results from a defect you should have prevented. Keep the fitting certificate and the inspection certificates with the vehicle papers.

Where you may not park this car

Many underground car parks and some ferry services refuse vehicles running on LPG or require a sealed system. If you go in anyway and damage occurs, that can be seen as an increase in the risk. Watch for this with a car park you use every day, because if the car regularly stands there, that is also the place of storage you declare when you apply.

What falls outside the cover in fire and defect cases

Fire caused by an external mishap falls under third-party, fire and theft and comprehensive cover. What remains excluded is damage whose cause lies in an inherent defect, in wear or in deferred maintenance of the system. The consequences of modifications you have carried out yourself to the fuel system or electronics are not paid for either. Driving without a valid inspection of the tank can lead to a refusal on a gas-related claim.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Do I have to declare that my car runs on LPG?

Yes. The fuel type matters for acceptance and the rate, and therefore falls under the duty of disclosure in Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code. If the system was fitted later, report it as a change and make sure the registration document has been amended. Without a declaration the insurer can reduce the payout when you claim under Article 7:930 DCC.

Is fire caused by the LPG system covered?

Fire falls under third-party, fire and theft and comprehensive cover, but the cause is decisive. If it is a defect in the system, poor fitting or deferred maintenance, the insurer can rely on the exclusion for an inherent defect. An approved installation with valid inspection certificates makes your position in that discussion considerably stronger.

May I take this car into an underground car park?

That is for the car park operator to decide, not your insurer. Many car parks refuse vehicles running on LPG or make requirements of the system. If you ignore a prohibition sign and damage or fire occurs, that can be held against you. Check the conditions at the entrance and choose a different regular place of storage if necessary.

Does the system change the value I get on a total loss?

The policy works from the value of the car immediately before the loss. A correctly fitted and registered system should be taken into account in establishing that value. If the system was never declared or is not recorded on the registration document, there is a good chance it will not be taken into account in the valuation.
