Taxi insurance

In taxi work you carry people for payment, and that changes everything: higher mileages, more city traffic and a duty of care towards your passengers.

In brief

Taxi insurance is designed for the professional carriage of passengers. Ordinary motor policies exclude this use, because the mileage and claims frequency differ sharply.

Alongside third-party liability and own-damage cover, cover for occupants is essential here. As a carrier you owe a duty of care to your passengers, and injury claims mount quickly.

This page deals with one part. The overview of all parts is on the main page on business insurance.

The same independent view, whatever insurer

We work with dozens of insurers and choose whichever fits your situation best — not whichever pays us the most. That means advice built around you, not around one brand.

What to look out for

Licence and operator card

Insurers ask for the taxi licence and the details of the drivers. Without valid documents, acceptance is not possible.

Occupants cover

Occupants’ accident insurance covers injury to passengers regardless of fault. In passenger transport that is not a luxury.

High mileages

A taxi covers many times the mileage of an ordinary car. Expect a higher excess and a premium based on mileage.

Changing drivers

If you work with several drivers, give their ages and experience. That determines the premium more than the vehicle does.

What determines the premium

  • Type and value of the vehicle
  • Annual mileage
  • Number and experience of the drivers
  • Area of deployment: city, region or airport
  • Claims history and excess

Calculate the premium

This information is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover.

Frequently asked questions

Can I insure a taxi on an ordinary motor policy?

No. The professional carriage of passengers is excluded on ordinary policies because of the different mileage and claims risk.

Are my passengers insured?

With occupants’ accident insurance, yes, regardless of who was at fault. Without that cover, the only route is a claim in liability.

What documents does the insurer ask for?

Normally the taxi licence, the operator card and the details of the drivers, including age and driving experience.

Why is the premium so much higher?

Because of the mileage and the city traffic. A taxi covers many times the distance of a private car and therefore has a demonstrably higher chance of a claim.
