Classic car insurance through NH1816

A classic car policy is cheaper than an ordinary motor policy because conditions on use are attached to it, and it is precisely those conditions that decide whether you are paid after a loss.

In brief

Classic car insurance is not an ordinary motor policy with a discount. It is a separate form that assumes limited and careful use: a car that covers few miles, is kept in dry storage and is not used to commute. The insurer therefore accepts a lower risk, and that assumption appears as a condition in the policy.

The age threshold at which a car is accepted as a classic differs by insurer and is not the same as the tax threshold. The requirement that you also have an everyday car registered in your name appears at one company and not at another. NH1816 applies its own acceptance rules. We test whether your car and your use actually fit them.

If it concerns a restored or collected car where the an agreed value is the key point, look as well at classic car insurance through Turien & Co or to Hiscox.

Independent, personal, sorted quickly

We compare your classic car insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

Through Finass or direct with NH1816?

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

Third-party liability insurance

Third-party liability insurance is compulsory by law and covers damage you cause to others with your car, not damage to your own car.

  • Damage to other vehicles
  • Injury to third parties
  • Damage to buildings and objects
  • Damage caused by passengers

Third-party liability + fire and theft

Alongside third-party liability cover, protection against damage to your own car from external causes you cannot prevent.

  • Fire and storm damage
  • Theft and burglary
  • Windscreen breakage and glass damage
  • Collision with animals

Comprehensive insurance

The most complete cover, including for damage you cause yourself, theft and total loss. We compare NH1816's comprehensive version with the market.

  • Hail damage
  • Damage through your own fault
  • Vandalism
  • Unknown party at fault

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Age of the vehicle. Every insurer applies its own lower limit above which a car is accepted as a classic.
  • Mileage declared. The annual ceiling is the heart of this form of policy and bears directly on the premium.
  • Storage location. Locked, dry storage is a condition of acceptance at most providers, not merely a discount factor.
  • Valuation arrangement. Market value or a value established in advance on the basis of a valuation report determines what you receive on a total loss.
  • Second car in your name. If you also have an everyday car, that supports the limited use of the classic.
  • Age and experience of the driver. Who is allowed to drive counts. A limited circle of drivers is weighed differently from an open arrangement.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The mileage ceiling is a hard limit

Virtually every classic car policy sets a maximum number of miles per year. If you exceed it, cover is not automatically lost, but the insurer can fall back on the declaration you made on the application. Keep a note of the odometer reading, therefore, and report it if your use changes. If the car grows into everyday transport, an ordinary motor policy is the honest answer.

Commuting and business use are excluded

The low premium rests on the assumption that the car is driven for pleasure. Driving to work every day, using the car for your business or hiring it out as a wedding car falls outside the cover. Even carrying guests for payment now and then counts as business use. If you want to use the car commercially, a different form of policy is needed; reporting it afterwards no longer helps.

Storage and maintenance are set out in the conditions

A classic car belongs in dry, locked storage. The storage location you declare is part of the risk accepted. If you move the car to a carport or to the public road, that risk changes. That touches the duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code. Wear, rust, corrosion and defects resulting from deferred maintenance fall outside any own-damage cover in any event.

Third-party or own-damage: with a classic car a real choice

On a modern car own-damage cover is often taken for granted. On a classic car it is not. Repairs are carried out by a specialist, parts are scarce and the car covers few miles. Some owners deliberately choose third-party plus fire and theft and carry the bodywork risk themselves. That choice stands or falls on whether you could have the car repaired yourself after a collision without the insurance.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

From what age does my car count as a classic car?

The insurer decides that itself and it stands apart from the tax rules for vehicle excise duty. The thresholds are not the same at every provider, and some apply an intermediate category for younger classics. We test your year of manufacture against the acceptance rules of several providers, so that you do not run into a refusal after you have already bought the car.

Do I need a valuation report?

For own-damage cover it is in practice indispensable. Without a recorded value the insurer works with market value on a total loss, and for a classic car that is hard to establish objectively. A valuation fixes the value in advance under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code. Reports have a limited period of validity; arrange a revaluation in good time, particularly after a restoration.

May I drive my classic to work now and then?

Occasional use is usually no problem, regular commuting is. The latter is generally excluded, because it breaks the assumption underlying this form of policy. If you drive the car more often than intended, report it. An amended policy is cheaper than an argument about whether you declared your use correctly once the damage has been done.

Is my classic insured during a restoration?

A car lying in pieces is not a running vehicle. Own-damage cover on parts standing loose in the workshop is often limited or absent, and damage caused during work by a third party belongs with that party's liability. Report a lengthy restoration in advance, so that fire and theft cover is arranged at the right location.
