Third-party liability insurance
- Damage to other vehicles
- Injury to third parties
- Damage to buildings and objects
- Damage caused by passengers
A classic car that goes to concours events, tours and club days spends almost as much time on a trailer or in someone else's shed as it does on the road: and that is exactly where the cover most often runs aground.

Anyone who actually uses their classic car rarely does so only in their own street. The vehicle goes to a run, a concours or a club day, is parked overnight at a hotel or on a cordoned-off site along the way, and sometimes travels on a trailer. Each of those moments raises its own question of cover, and most standard conditions are written for a car that stands in its owner's garage.
Enthusiasts also rarely own exactly one vehicle. A second car under restoration, a motorcycle, a stock of parts and tools in the workshop: together that is a considerable value which does not automatically fall under the vehicle policy. Parts that are not fitted, are almost never covered by own-damage cover and belong with a home contents or valuables solution.
We compare the Hiscox classic car product with those of other providers on the points that matter to people who use their cars: cover during events, transport by trailer, temporary storage elsewhere and the treatment of loose parts. If your main concern is the valuation and the mileage limit, read our page on classic car insurance through Turien & Co.
We compare your classic car insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

Get coveredThe structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
Third-party liability insurance is compulsory by law and covers damage you cause to others with your car, not damage to your own car.
Alongside third-party liability cover, protection against damage to your own car from external causes you cannot prevent.
The most complete cover, including for your own damage, theft and total loss. We compare the Hiscox comprehensive version with the market.

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.
We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.
You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.
We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.
We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
A shared tour on the public road is normal use. As soon as a classification, timing or an average speed comes into it, conditions quickly speak of a competition, and competitions are excluded. The same applies to manoeuvring tests on a closed site. Ask the organisers in advance how the event is described in the entry documents and put that to your insurer.
If the classic car travels on a trailer, it is temporarily a load. Damage caused by incorrect strapping, by a blown tyre on the trailer or during loading and unloading then falls not under your own-damage cover but at most under the carrier's liability. If you engage a haulier, ask for their carrier's cover; it is limited and often excludes damage caused by an inherent defect.
A dismantled engine, a set of original wheels or a stock of body panels does not fall under the own-damage cover on the vehicle, because that relates to the car as a whole. A fire or a break-in at the workshop then hits an uninsured value. Take stock of what is lying loose, record the purchase value with photographs and receipts, and place that stock in a separate section or on a separate policy.
Excluded under virtually all conditions are: taking part in speed events and track use, damage arising during work by a garage or restorer, and defects caused by corrosion, wear or deferred maintenance. Commercial use, such as hire for weddings or filming, also falls outside enthusiast cover. If you do that regularly, a business solution is needed rather than a private classic car policy.
Replacement transport after a claim Stay mobile with replacement transport.
This is what people ask us most.
On an ordinary tour on the public road, generally yes. As soon as timing, a classification or a test on a cordoned-off site is added, the insurer can treat it as a competition and there is no cover. Ask the organisation in advance what the event is officially called and declare your entry; a short confirmation beforehand prevents argument afterwards.
Usually not under your own-damage cover, because the car is then not taking part in traffic but is a load. Arrange cover through the haulier or ask for an express extension for transport. Check loading and unloading as well. It is precisely when driving on to the trailer that damage occurs to the floorpan, spoiler and exhaust.
That is usual with enthusiast products and makes the administration clearer. Each vehicle does need its own valuation and its own form of cover. A running example and a car under restoration do not ask the same. Declare as well who is allowed to drive, because a collection policy often has a limited circle of permitted drivers.
Only if they are expressly included. Own-damage cover relates to the vehicle as registered, not to a dismantled engine or a rack of body panels. A fire or a break-in at the workshop then hits an uninsured value. Record the stock with photographs and proof of purchase and discuss whether a separate section or a home contents solution is the better fit.
