Classic car insurance through ASR

With a classic car the question after a loss is rarely whether a payment will be made, but whether the part can still be found and who is allowed to work on it.

In brief

In reality, ASR's classic car insurance is judged on how claims are handled, not on the premium. With a car decades old, the problem is that a wing, a window or a seat cover can no longer be ordered. Repair then runs through used parts, a panel beater who forms the metal himself, or a specialist who knows the model. Agree in advance that you may choose the repairer and that you will not be sent to a chain bodyshop as a matter of course.

Because labour hours run high and parts are scarce, a classic car is written off as beyond economic repair sooner than the picture suggests. Under a policy with an agreed value, the amount payable is fixed on the basis of Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code, but the question whether the car is repaired or written off still stands alongside it. Discuss whether you may buy the wreck back.

Acceptance turns on the age of the vehicle, the mileage you declare and whether there is a car for everyday use. You report a loss as soon as you know of it, as Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires. For establishing the value and for the valuation report itself, see classic car insurance through Ansvar Idea.

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

Third-party liability insurance

Third-party liability insurance is compulsory by law and covers damage you cause to others with your car, not damage to your own car.

  • Damage to other vehicles
  • Injury to third parties
  • Damage to buildings and objects
  • Damage caused by passengers

Third-party liability + fire and theft

Alongside third-party liability cover, protection against damage to your own car from external causes you cannot prevent.

  • Fire and storm damage
  • Theft and burglary
  • Windscreen breakage and glass damage
  • Collision with animals

Comprehensive insurance

The most complete cover, including for damage you cause yourself, theft and total loss. We compare ASR's comprehensive version with the market.

  • Hail damage
  • Damage through your own fault
  • Vandalism
  • Unknown party at fault

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Parts and who may work on them

Agree that repairs will be carried out by a specialist or restorer who knows the model, and not automatically by an affiliated bodyshop. Set out as well how used, reproduction or hand-made parts will be treated, because for many models new original parts are simply not available. Without that agreement the insurer decides the route, and the outcome is rarely what an enthusiast had in mind.

The line between a rally and a competition

Taking part in a club run or a treasure hunt is usually no problem. As soon as time is measured, a classification is kept or manoeuvring tests are included, it shifts into competition and the cover is gone. Regularity runs therefore fall outside the policy more often than entrants think. Ask the organisers for the rules in advance and put the question to the insurer before you enter.

From youngtimer to classic

Enthusiast terms apply only from a certain vehicle age, and that threshold differs by insurer. For a car below it there is often a youngtimer version with its own requirements. In both cases insurers expect you to have another car for everyday use and to keep the annual mileage low. If you sell that everyday car, tell us.

What is not covered

Outside the cover are: runs with timing, a classification or manoeuvring tests; damage during restoration, dismantling or test drives with a vehicle in an unfinished state; mechanical failure, leaking gaskets, corrosion and other wear; diminution in value after a technically sound repair; and hire for weddings, film or advertising work where that use has not been declared in advance.

Breakdown assistance

What does your premium depend on?

  • Age and type of vehicle. The year of manufacture threshold decides whether enthusiast or youngtimer terms apply.
  • Sum insured or agreed value. The amount that forms the starting point for the payment in the event of a total loss.
  • Availability of parts. A model for which parts are barely obtainable makes repair long and costly.
  • Annual mileage and purpose of use. Club runs and summer tours count differently from regular commuting.
  • Storage. A dry, locked space at a fixed address as against a shared shed or the public road.
  • A car for everyday use. Under enthusiast terms, having a second car is often a condition of acceptance.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

May I take part in a club run or an event?

A tour or treasure hunt without timing is generally covered. As soon as time is clocked, a classification is drawn up or tests are included, it counts as competition and the cover falls away. Regularity runs come under this more often than entrants expect. Ask for the rules and put the question to the insurer before you enter.

Are used parts paid for in a repair?

For many classic cars that is the only route, because new parts are no longer available. Insurers then pay for the used part plus the labour, or for having it made. Set out in advance how this will be handled and who chooses the repairer; otherwise it is decided after the loss by the party paying the bill.

From what age can my car go on a classic car policy?

That threshold differs by insurer and is set out in the acceptance conditions. If your car is below it, there is often a youngtimer version with its own requirements for mileage and storage. Both forms assume limited use and the presence of another car for everyday journeys.

Am I insured while the car is being restored?

Not while driving: damage during dismantling, assembly or a test drive with an unfinished vehicle is excluded. For the risk of fire and theft in the workshop or in storage a separate arrangement is needed, and sometimes the restorer's own insurance covers it. Ask about that before you take the car in, not after something has happened.
