In brief

For an ordinary car the insurer pays the market value. For a classic that concept does not work: the vehicle gets older but not less valuable, and there is no depreciation table for it. Classic car insurance therefore works with an agreed value. An expert records the value in a report and that amount is the starting point on a total loss. Without a valuation you fall back on an argument after the event, at precisely the moment you do not want to have one.

There is something in return. The favourable terms exist because the risk is small, and that risk only stays small if you keep to the agreements: a maximum number of miles per year, no commuting and storage in a locked, dry space. A classic that starts serving as the everyday car, or stands outside in the street, no longer belongs on this form of policy.

Third-party liability cover under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) remains compulsory as long as the registration has not been suspended. For a car that is just not old enough for classic terms there is the youngtimer scheme, and for young cars of exceptional value an exclusive motor policy is the route to take. Loose parts on the shelf are not part of the motor policy.

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The valuation is the heart of the policy

A valuation report from a recognised expert records the value of your classic. On a total loss the insurer pays that amount, without any conversation about depreciation. Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code prohibits a payment from putting you in a distinctly better position, and it is precisely the valuation that prevents that argument. Reports have a limited period of validity; once it expires you fall back on the ordinary way of establishing value after a loss.

Limited use is a hard condition

The favourable premium hangs on the pattern of use: fine weather, club runs, events. Most policies exclude commuting and professional use and attach a maximum to the annual mileage. If you consistently drive more, or use the car as a stand-in for the everyday car, you are acting contrary to the conditions. Report a change in use; moving a classic to a different form of policy is better than a refused claim.

Storage, suspension and the winter season

Insurers set requirements for storage: locked, dry and usually not open to the public. Anyone who keeps the car elsewhere in winter has to say so. If you suspend the registration with the RDW (the Dutch vehicle authority), the insurance obligation under the WAM falls away, but the vehicle can still burn or be stolen. Leave the own-damage cover in place during the suspension, therefore, and do not cancel the policy until the spring.

Restoration, parts and runs against the clock

A car in pieces on the ramp is not a running vehicle; damage during a major restoration often falls outside the motor policy. Parts you keep in stock belong with the home contents or with a valuables insurance, not with the car. Taking part in runs where speed or time is measured is excluded as standard, even where the event presents itself as touring.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Agreed value. The amount recorded in the valuation report is the basis of calculation for the own-damage cover.
  • Year of manufacture and age class. Determines whether the vehicle falls under classic or youngtimer terms. Those carry different requirements.
  • Agreed annual mileage. The lower the maximum agreed, the more favourable the terms. Exceeding it affects the cover.
  • Storage location. Locked, dry storage is assessed differently from a carport or a space on the public road.
  • Whether you also have an everyday car. Insurers assume the classic is not your only means of transport. That supports the limited use.
  • Age and experience of the drivers. There is often a minimum age and a limited circle of people allowed to drive the vehicle.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Do I need a valuation report?

For own-damage cover on a classic, almost always. Without a valuation the insurer establishes the value only after the loss, and your restoration hours and rare parts are then hard to prove. With a report the amount is fixed in advance. Watch the period of validity: if the report expires, arrange a revaluation in good time, certainly if you have done a great deal to the car in the meantime.

May I drive my classic car to work?

Usually not. Commuting and business use are generally excluded under classic terms, because the premium is based on occasional use. If you want to use the car more often, report it in advance. There are policies with a wider mileage on different terms. Quietly driving more than agreed is the most common reason for argument after a loss.

Can I stop the insurance during the winter?

You can suspend the registration with the RDW. The statutory insurance obligation then falls away. The risks in storage do not disappear with it: fire, theft and water damage remain. It is wiser to let the third-party liability cover rest and keep the own-damage cover running. Many classic car policies have a winter arrangement for this; ask how your insurer handles it.

Are loose parts and tools included?

Not on the motor policy. That covers the vehicle as registered, including what is fitted to it as standard. A second engine, a set of original wheels or rare body panels in the shed belong with the home contents or with valuables cover. Discuss that separately, particularly where the parts collected together represent a considerable value.
