Third-party liability insurance
- Damage to other vehicles
- Injury to third parties
- Damage to buildings and objects
- Damage caused by passengers
A motorcycle is ridden for half the year and stands still for the other half, and those two periods each call on a different part of the policy.

Third-party liability cover on a motorcycle is compulsory under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) and continues for as long as the registration is in your name, including in the winter months. Above that, at NH1816 you choose third-party, fire and theft or comprehensive. For motorcyclists the difference lies above all in the single-vehicle fall: that falls under comprehensive and not under third-party, fire and theft.
During the storage period the risk shifts to theft, fire and damage in the garage. Motorcycles are light enough to be lifted, which is why insurers set requirements for the lock, the anchoring and sometimes a tracking system. In the riding season there is the added question of what happens to your equipment: helmet, suit and gloves are not part of the machine.
We test NH1816's motorcycle version on its treatment of accessories, the theft conditions and the valuation basis, and set it alongside other providers such as Turien & Co and De Goudse.
We compare your motorcycle insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

Get coveredThe structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
Third-party liability insurance is compulsory by law and covers damage you cause to others with your motorcycle, not damage to your own motorcycle.
Alongside third-party liability cover, protection against damage to your own car from external causes you cannot prevent.
The most complete cover, including for damage you cause yourself, theft and total loss. We compare NH1816's comprehensive version with the market.

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.
We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.
You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.
We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.
We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
A machine that goes down on a gravel strip or on a bend without anyone else being involved produces own damage for which there is no other party. Third-party, fire and theft has only named causes such as fire, storm, theft and glass damage; your own fall is not among them. Anyone who tours regularly therefore usually ends up with comprehensive in practice, even on a machine that is a few years old.
Your equipment is not part of the vehicle. Many policies pay for helmet and clothing only where there is a covered collision at the same time, and then up to a limited amount. Wear, a dropped helmet without an accident and theft of clothing from a top box generally fall outside. So ask expressly about the equipment section before you go on the premium.
Own-damage cover on a motorcycle is conditional. Insurers usually require an approved lock, often combined with a ground anchor or chain, and sometimes a tracking system on heavier machines. If the machine stood unlocked in an unsecured shed, that is a ground for rejection. Keep the certificates for the lock and the security separately; after a theft the insurer asks for them first, together with both keys.
Taking part in competitions, time trials, speed trials and training on a circuit falls outside the cover, even on a touring machine and even where it is a private track day. Rider training on a closed site without timing is often permitted, but that differs per insurer. Report a planned track day in advance; afterwards there is no room left to put this right.
Replacement transport after a claim Stay mobile with replacement transport.
This is what people ask us most.
Some insurers have a winter arrangement under which cover in the storage months is limited to fire, theft and storm damage at a lower premium. The third-party liability cover then continues, which is necessary as long as the registration is not suspended. If you do suspend the registration, the duty to insure lapses, but you are then no longer covered for theft from storage either.
A passenger's injury falls under the compulsory third-party liability cover, because the passenger is a third party. Your own injury as rider falls outside it. If you want to cover that, accident or indemnity cover for occupants is needed. For motorcyclists that is a real point, because injury in a single-vehicle accident is entirely for your own account.
Only if you have declared them. A list price assumes the standard specification, so a modified exhaust, a pannier system or altered handlebars are not included in it. Report these parts on the application and keep the invoices. Without that declaration you are paid the value of a standard machine after a theft.
That is dealt with by assistance cover, which is separate from own-damage cover. Establish in advance whether only recovery to the nearest workshop is covered, or also transport of the machine back to the Netherlands and transport for yourself. On a motorcycling holiday the latter is the most important part, because otherwise you are left without transport hundreds of kilometres from home.
Every situation is different. For these situations we have a separate page.
