In brief

A classic car has no market price that can be read off a table. Two cars of the same year can be far apart because of the state of restoration, originality and history. A classic car policy therefore turns on the an agreed value: a valuation agreed in advance and made binding under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code, so that on a total loss there is no need to negotiate over market value.

The second feature is the repair. A classic car does not go to any bodyshop chain that happens to be nearby. Panels are formed by hand, parts come from abroad or are reproduced, and a specialist's hourly rate is different from that of a general repairer. Whether you may choose the repairer yourself is a material condition on this form of policy, not a detail.

If you mainly drive the car sparingly and your concern is the conditions of use and the storage, look as well at classic car insurance through NH1816. For collections of several vehicles we also compare Hiscox.

Through Finass or direct with Turien & Co?

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

Third-party liability insurance

Third-party liability insurance is compulsory by law and covers damage you cause to others with your car, not damage to your own car.

  • Damage to other vehicles
  • Injury to third parties
  • Damage to buildings and objects
  • Damage caused by passengers

Third-party liability + fire and theft

Alongside third-party liability cover, protection against damage to your own car from external causes you cannot prevent.

  • Fire and storm damage
  • Theft and burglary
  • Windscreen breakage and glass damage
  • Collision with animals

Comprehensive insurance

The most complete cover, including for damage you cause yourself, theft and total loss. We compare Turien & Co's comprehensive version with the market.

  • Hail damage
  • Damage through your own fault
  • Vandalism
  • Unknown party at fault

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Agreed value. The value established in the valuation report is the basis of calculation for the own-damage premium.
  • Rarity and availability of parts. A model for which parts are barely obtainable carries a higher claims cost on repair.
  • Number of kilometres per year. Classic car policies assume limited use. The ceiling declared helps set the premium.
  • Storage and security. Dry, locked and protected storage is generally a condition of acceptance on this form of policy.
  • Number of vehicles. With several classics on one policy the collection is looked at as a whole rather than car by car.
  • Circle of drivers. A limited, named group of drivers is weighed differently from an open arrangement.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Agreed value and revaluation

A valuation report from a recognised valuer fixes the value and prevents argument afterwards. Such a report has a limited period of validity. If it expires you fall back on market value at precisely the moment you need the value established. Arrange a new valuation after a restoration, after fitting a reconditioned engine, and as soon as the market value of your type shifts noticeably.

Who may carry out the repair

With a classic car the free choice of repairer is decisive. A specialist who knows the model works differently from a bodyshop calculating on standard times. Watch the treatment of original partsas well: replacing them with new manufacture can lower the value of the car, while repairing the original part is more expensive. Set out in advance which route the insurer accepts.

A restoration in progress is not covered

A car lying in pieces is no longer a vehicle. Own-damage cover on loose parts in a workshop is limited or absent, and damage caused by the restorer belongs with that firm's own liability and care, custody and control exclusion. Report a long project in advance, so that fire and theft cover sits at the right address and no period arises in which the car falls under nothing at all.

Rallies and events: watch the timing

Tours and club events are generally permitted. As soon as speed, timing or a classification is involved it becomes a competition, and competitions are excluded. Regularity runs come under that at one provider and not at another. Ask about it for each event and have the answer confirmed in writing. A reference to the club calendar is not proof of cover.

Breakdown assistance

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

What happens if my valuation report has expired?

The binding statement of value then falls away and the insurer works with market value after a loss. For a classic car that is almost always unfavourable, because the state of restoration and the history no longer count. Put the expiry date of the report in your diary and arrange a new valuation before it expires, not after damage has occurred.

Will I get original parts back after a loss?

That does not follow automatically. An insurer may repair in the economically responsible way, and that is not always the way that keeps the car original. If you want to be sure that original or correctly reproduced parts are used, have it set out in advance. Afterwards there is little room, because the loss has by then been calculated.

May I take the classic to a rally abroad?

Tours and events without timing are generally permitted within the territory of the green card. As soon as a classification or a speed element is added, it is a competition and the cover falls away. Look at the assistance cover as well: a classic that breaks down abroad usually cannot be repaired on the spot and has to come back to the Netherlands.

Can I put several classic cars on one policy?

Yes, that is usual on this form of policy. For a collector it is clearer, and it fits the fact that only one car is driven at a time. Do make sure each vehicle keeps its own agreed value and that changes in the collection are reported straight away, otherwise a newly bought car stands uninsured in the storage.
