In brief

The battery pack is by far the most expensive part of an electric car and at the same time the most vulnerable to the kind of damage insurers find awkward: a knock from below on a kerb or a speed bump, water damage, or a thermal incident after a collision. Whether the pack is your property or hired from the manufacturer also determines who is entitled to payment when it is damaged.

Driving electric also brings equipment that did not use to exist. A charging cable lies in the boot or hangs from a public charge point and regularly disappears. A charge point at home is a fixed installation for which it is not the motor policy but the buildings or liability insurance that is in play. If that charge point causes a fire, Article 6:174 of the Dutch Civil Code on the liability of the owner of a building comes into view.

We compare the Nationale-Nederlanden product for electric cars with the rest of the market, looking at the battery clause, the cover for the charging cable and charge point, and the arrangements for recovery and quarantine after a battery incident. Through Finass or direct with Nationale-Nederlanden?

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

Third-party liability insurance

Third-party liability insurance is compulsory by law and covers damage you cause to others with your car, not damage to your own car.

  • Damage to other vehicles
  • Injury to third parties
  • Damage to buildings and objects
  • Damage caused by passengers

Third-party liability + fire and theft

Alongside third-party liability cover, protection against damage to your own car from external causes you cannot prevent.

  • Fire and storm damage
  • Theft and burglary
  • Windscreen breakage and glass damage
  • Collision with animals

Comprehensive insurance

The most complete cover, including for damage you cause yourself, theft and total loss. We compare Nationale-Nederlanden's comprehensive version with the market.

  • Hail damage
  • Damage through your own fault
  • Vandalism
  • Unknown party at fault

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Do you hire the battery or is it yours

Under a hire or subscription arrangement, the pack remains the property of the manufacturer. If you damage it, the route is not your own-damage cover but your contractual liability towards the hire company. So check whether the policy expressly mentions the battery pack and whether payment is made on replacement value as new or by reference to remaining capacity. Gradual loss of capacity through normal use is excluded under every set of conditions.

Damage from below is the real risk

The pack sits in the floor. A bollard, a high speed bump or a piece of lost load can strike the casing without much being visible from the outside. Manufacturers often prescribe replacement of the complete pack after such contact. So report even light contact with the ground and have it recorded; anyone who only claims months later will be asked whether the connection can still be shown.

The charging cable and the charge point are two policies

A loose charging cable often falls under the accessories section of the motor policy, but theft of a cable hanging from a public charge point is by no means always covered. A fixed charge point on the wall belongs to the house and therefore to the buildings insurance (opstalverzekering). If that charge point causes damage to someone else, it is your liability insurance that is in play and not the motor insurance.

After a battery fire the second bill begins

A damaged pack that could ignite cannot simply be left at an ordinary recovery firm. Special transport and storage in quarantine follow, sometimes for weeks. Ask whether recovery and storage costs fall within the cover and up to what amount. Damage caused by incorrect or unapproved charging equipment, by software you have modified yourself and by ignoring a manufacturer's recall generally remains excluded.

Breakdown assistance

What does your premium depend on?

  • List price and power output. Electric cars are heavy and accelerate quickly. Both count in the rating.
  • Ownership or hire of the battery pack. A hired pack calls for a different clause from a pack that belongs with the car.
  • Repair network and parts. Brand-tied repair of high-voltage components is labour-intensive and limits the choice of repairers.
  • Charging situation. Charging at home from a fixed wallbox differs from charging exclusively at public or rapid chargers.
  • Annual mileage. Many electric cars are used for business and therefore cover more miles than average.
  • Cover and excess chosen. Comprehensive cover with an express battery extension costs more than third-party, fire and theft without it.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is the battery pack covered?

With own-damage cover, usually yes for sudden damage from outside, such as a collision or a knock from below. Loss of capacity through ageing is never included. That is wear. If you hire the pack, check whether the policy has a clause that takes the owner's interests into account, otherwise you remain contractually liable to the hire company.

What if my charging cable is stolen?

That depends on the accessories section and on where the cable was. A cable taken from a locked boot is assessed differently from a cable left unattended at a public charge point. Some conditions require a cable lock. Declare the cable as an accessory when you take out the policy and keep the purchase invoice in case you have to claim.

Is my home charging point covered by my car insurance?

No. A permanently fitted charge point is part of the house and belongs with the buildings insurance (opstalverzekering). If the charge point stands free on your own land, it may be a movable item and the home contents insurance (inboedelverzekering) comes into play. If the charge point causes fire or injury to someone else, the liability of the owner of a building under Article 6:174 of the Dutch Civil Code arises.

Is recovery after a battery incident paid for?

A damaged high-voltage pack requires specialist transport and storage away from other vehicles, sometimes for a long period. Those costs mount up and are not expressly mentioned in every policy. So ask in advance whether recovery, quarantine storage and safe disposal of the pack fall within the cover and whether a maximum applies.
