In brief

The battery pack lies in the floor of the car and is the most expensive component in it. That makes claims handling different from a petrol or diesel car: a scrape on the floor pan or a knock against a kerb can trigger a compulsory inspection of the pack, and sometimes a decision to write it off. With those costs, a car is an economic total loss sooner than the bodywork would suggest.

Charging brings risks that the policy treats separately. The charging cable often counts as an accessory and is by no means always covered if it is stolen from a public charging point. A charge point at your home belongs to the buildings, not to the car. If a passer-by trips over a cable you have laid across the pavement, that liability runs through Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code and not through own-damage cover.

When you apply, state whether the battery pack is yours or leased, and where you normally charge. Both points touch on the duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code and determine who is paid in the event of a total loss. For a car with a combustion engine the balance is different. That is set out on car insurance through Ansvar Idea.

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

Third-party liability insurance

Third-party liability insurance is compulsory by law and covers damage you cause to others with your car, not damage to your own car.

  • Damage to other vehicles
  • Injury to third parties
  • Damage to buildings and objects
  • Damage caused by passengers

Third-party liability + fire and theft

Alongside third-party liability cover, protection against damage to your own car from external causes you cannot prevent.

  • Fire and storm damage
  • Theft and burglary
  • Windscreen breakage and glass damage
  • Collision with animals

Comprehensive insurance

The most complete cover, including for damage you cause yourself, theft and total loss. We compare Ansvar Idea's comprehensive version with the market.

  • Hail damage
  • Damage through your own fault
  • Vandalism
  • Unknown party at fault

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The battery pack after a claim

After a collision or a knock against the floor pan, the pack has to be read out and sometimes physically inspected. That investigation costs time and money, and its outcome decides whether the car is repaired or written off. Have it confirmed that diagnostic costs fall within the cover, even where no fault is ultimately found. Gradual loss of capacity through use is never an insured loss.

Charging cable, charge point and liability

The cable is a separate item of considerable value and regularly disappears from public charging points. Check whether it is insured as an accessory and on what conditions. A charge point on your own land falls under your buildings or home contents insurance, not under the car. If you lay a cable across the pavement, you are liable for injury to a passer-by under Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code.

Fire, recovery and storage after a claim

A damaged battery pack can still catch fire hours or days after the incident. Recovery firms therefore set such cars aside, sometimes in a container of water, and keep them for longer. That recovery, the transport and the temporary storage are costs on top of the repair. Check whether your policy covers recovery and clearance costs and whether a limit applies.

What is not covered

Outside the cover are: loss of battery capacity through normal use and ageing; software and charging faults where there is no physical damage; damage from charging on an unsound installation or one not fitted to specification; the charge point at your home, which falls under the buildings; misuse of your charge card or charging subscription; and use on a circuit or on timed runs.

Breakdown assistance

What does your premium depend on?

  • Value and repair cost of the battery pack. The capacity and construction of the pack determine what an inspection or replacement costs.
  • Engine power and weight. A heavy, powerful car causes more damage to the other party in a collision.
  • No-claims years. Here too, the registered number of years without a paid claim sets your premium step.
  • Annual mileage. Electric cars are often driven for business and heavily used. That counts in the premium.
  • Charging and storage arrangements. Charging on your own land or at the roadside, and where the car is kept at night.
  • Type of cover and excess. Third party, third party fire and theft or comprehensive, possibly with a different excess for battery damage.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is loss of battery capacity insured?

No. A pack holding less charge after some years is normal ageing and therefore wear, and wear is not an insured loss. For premature loss of capacity there is often a manufacturer's warranty with its own threshold and term. Assess that warranty separately from the policy. The insurer will refer you to it when you claim.

Is my charging cable covered by the car insurance?

Sometimes, as an accessory, and then usually only where the cable has been declared. Theft of a cable connected to a public charging point is by no means always paid for, because there is no forced entry to the car. Ask which section the cable falls under and what amount is insured for it.

Who is liable if someone falls over my charging cable?

You are, if you have laid the cable in such a way that a passer-by can trip over it. That liability follows from Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code and falls not under car insurance but under your personal liability insurance (AVP). Use a cable mat or a channel and follow the rules your local authority sets for charging across the pavement.

What happens on a total loss if the battery is leased?

The pack is then not yours but the lease company's, and the payment for that part goes to the owner. Your settlement covers only the car without the pack. Declare the lease arrangement when you apply, otherwise argument arises after a total loss about who is entitled to what.
