In brief

With a classic it is not the type of cover that is the difficult point, but the determination of value. An ordinary motor policy works with market value, and on a car forty years old that gets you nowhere. A classic car policy therefore works with an agreed value, established by a recognised valuer and recorded before the loss.

In addition, the state of originality. A car with its original engine, colour and interior is a different matter from the same car with a modern engine, lowered suspension and a non-factory colour. That difference belongs on the policy schedule, not only in the claim report.

If you keep several cars, a car collection insurance is more practical. If you drive a classic in the higher value segment with a lot of event use, also compare the premium classic car insurance.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. What does your premium depend on?

  • Agreed value. The amount from the valuation report is the basis for the own-damage premium.
  • Year of manufacture and age criterion. Insurers apply a minimum age. More recent youngtimers fall under a different rate.
  • Storage location. A locked garage at the house is weighed differently from a rented lock-up or a carport.
  • Annual mileage. Classic car policies assume limited use. More kilometres means more premium.
  • Type of cover. Third-party liability only, third-party, fire and theft, or comprehensive cover based on the valuation.
  • Driver and security. The age and experience of the regular driver and any immobiliser or tracker fitted.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The valuation report is your evidence

A valuation by a recognised expert fixes the value before anything happens. Without that report, a total loss falls back on what the insurer considers reasonable, and that is where the argument starts. Reports age: have the car revalued after a restoration, an engine rebuild or a clear movement in the market. Under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code you never receive more than your actual loss, so a report that is too old costs you money.

Declare originality and modifications

A more recent engine fitted, disc brakes, a sports exhaust or a different colour change both the risk and the value. If you do not report those changes, the insurer can rely on Articles 7:928 and 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code when you claim and reduce the payout proportionately or reject it. A change during the term should also be reported: the policy was taken out on the car as it was described at the outset.

Restoration and loose parts

A car in pieces is not a roadworthy vehicle. If the body is at the paint shop and the engine at a rebuild specialist, that often falls outside the motor policy: it insures a vehicle, not a stock of parts. Fire or theft at the restoration firm then runs through that firm's business insurance. For the restoration period we arrange a separate agreement or object cover at the correct location.

Standing idle, suspension and vulnerability to theft

Classics are driven little and stand still a great deal. Damage caused by standing idle itself — seized brakes, corroding pipes, damp in the upholstery, rodents in the wiring loom — is not covered. If you suspend the registration, the obligation under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM)lapses, but you may no longer take the car on the road. Early models have no electronic security at all. An immobiliser and locked storage are then not a luxury.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Do I have to have a valuation report?

For own-damage cover, almost always. Without a report the insurer has no recorded value and falls back on its own estimate in the event of a total loss. For third-party liability cover only, a valuation is not needed, because only the other party's loss is paid. We tell you which valuers the insurer concerned accepts.

May I drive the classic to work?

Usually not. The policy assumes hobby use and excludes commuting and business use, precisely because daily journeys change the risk of a claim. If you drive it to the office regularly, report that. We look for a variant that permits it or advise ordinary motor insurance alongside.

Are loose parts and the restoration stock covered?

In principle not. Motor insurance covers the vehicle, not a shed full of parts. For a front panel, a second engine block or a set of original seats, a separate agreement or contents or object cover at the storage location is needed. Tell us where the items are and who manages the space.

What happens if I suspend the registration?

The insurance obligation under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) then lapses and you may no longer take the car on the public road. You can usually keep own-damage cover against fire and theft in storage in place at a lower premium. Report the suspension to us, otherwise you keep paying for road use you do not have.
