Business trailer insurance
Business trailers are almost always stolen while uncoupled, from a driveway or an industrial estate. That is precisely the moment when cover through the towing vehicle stops.

In brief
As long as the trailer is coupled, liability falls under the third-party liability cover of the towing vehicle. Uncoupled, that no longer applies, and damage to the trailer itself is not covered in any event.
Business trailer insurance covers own damage and theft of closed trailers, tippers, machine transporters and semi-trailers. For theft, an approved coupling lock is almost always a requirement.
This page deals with one part. The overview of all parts is on the main page on business insurance.
What to look out for
Uncoupled is the moment of risk
On an industrial estate or driveway a trailer stands unattended. That is where things go wrong and where the vehicle policy stops.
Coupling lock and storage
Theft cover depends on an approved coupling or wheel lock and on the storage location you declared.
The load is separate
Tools, materials or a machine on the trailer are not covered by the trailer's own-damage cover.
Registration required from 750 kilos
A heavier trailer has a registration number of its own. Also check that your employees' driving licences are sufficient for the combination.
What determines the premium
- Value and type of trailer
- Weight — under or over 750 kilos
- Storage and security
- Use and area of operation
- Claims history
This information is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Frequently asked questions
Is my trailer insured through the van?
Only for liability and only while it is coupled. Theft and damage to the trailer fall outside that.
What does the insurer require against theft?
Usually an approved coupling lock or wheel clamp, sometimes a tracker, plus the storage location you declared.
Is the load covered as well?
No. Tools or a machine on the trailer are insured through own-transport or plant and machinery insurance.
From what point is registration compulsory?
From 750 kilos maximum permitted mass. Also mind the licence requirements for the combination.
What is covered and what is not
What is covered
| Situation | Third-party, fire and theft | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|
| The trailer folds back against the tail lift while reversing | No | Yes |
| The tipper burns out through a short circuit in the wiring | Yes | Yes |
| A branch falls on the closed trailer on the building site during a storm | Yes | Yes |
| Someone hits your parked trailer and drives on | No | Yes |
| The machine transporter overturns on the motorway and damages the crash barrier | No | No |
| The wooden floor turns out to have rotted through after years of outdoor storage | No | No |
Damage you cause to someone else with the combination runs through the liability cover, not through the trailer's own-damage cover.
