In brief

The single-vehicle fall is the type of loss that defines a motorcycle policy. Gravel on a bend, wet road markings or low speed while parking up: there is no other party and third-party liability cover pays nothing towards your own machine. Only own-damage cover does that. On a motorcycle with fairings, the cost of fairing panels, mirrors, levers and exhaust mounts up quickly after a low-speed fall.

Motorcycle clothing, helmet, boots and gloves are not automatically covered by the policy. There is a separate section for those, which usually pays out only where there is insured accident damage to the motorcycle at the same time. Wear and tear of clothing, or a helmet that fell off the mirror, stays outside that cover. The same applies to panniers, a satnav mount and a modified exhaust, unless they have been declared as accessories.

Out of season you can suspend the registration. The obligation under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) then lapses, but so does cover for use on the road. If you want fire and theft cover to continue while the machine is in storage, agree that expressly. If you also ride a lighter vehicle, see moped insurance through ASR.

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

Third-party liability insurance

Third-party liability insurance is compulsory by law and covers damage you cause to others with your motorcycle, not damage to your own motorcycle.

  • Damage to other vehicles
  • Injury to third parties
  • Damage to buildings and objects
  • Damage caused by passengers

Third-party liability + fire and theft

Alongside third-party liability cover, protection against damage to your own car from external causes you cannot prevent.

  • Fire and storm damage
  • Theft and burglary
  • Windscreen breakage and glass damage
  • Collision with animals

Comprehensive insurance

The most complete cover, including for damage you cause yourself, theft and total loss. We compare ASR's comprehensive version with the market.

  • Hail damage
  • Damage through your own fault
  • Vandalism
  • Unknown party at fault

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The fall with no other party involved

With motorcycle damage there is often no liable third party. Third-party liability cover is then worthless for your own repairs: fairing panels, tank, exhaust, brake levers and footrests are for your own account without own-damage cover. Weigh that against the market value of the machine. On a recent bike with a lot of bodywork, comprehensive cover often pays for itself; on an older tourer with little fairing, the balance can fall the other way.

Clothing, helmet and luggage

The section for motorcycle equipment usually pays out only where there is covered accident damage to the machine at the same time, and has a limit of its own. A helmet that has to be replaced after a fall falls under it. A helmet that fell out of a cupboard does not. Keep the receipts for your suit, helmet and gloves, because payment is often made on a market value basis with an annual depreciation.

Theft, lock and storage

Insurers require a certified lock and, increasingly, that the machine is secured to a fixed point or kept in a locked space. On more expensive bikes a tracking system with a subscription is added. The requirement appears in the clauses and applies on the road too, for example at an overnight hotel stop. If the subscription for the tracking system expires, theft cover lapses wherever that system is a condition.

What is not covered

Outside the cover remain: track days, training on a closed circuit and timed runs; use for motorcycle instruction or hire; damage arising during maintenance work, dismantling or a test ride with an unapproved modification; motorcycle clothing without simultaneous accident damage to the machine; wear of tyres, brake pads and chain; and undeclared accessories such as panniers, exhaust or satnav.

Breakdown assistance

What does your premium depend on?

  • Engine capacity and power. A light tourer and a heavy sports bike fall into different risk classes.
  • Value and accessories. The sum insured for the machine plus declared panniers, exhaust, fairings and satnav.
  • Age and length of time holding a licence. How long you have held the motorcycle licence and how much experience you have with this class.
  • No-claims years. The registered years without a paid claim also determine the step on the scale under a motorcycle policy.
  • Storage and security. Garage, shed or street, plus the certified lock and any tracking system.
  • Seasonal use and mileage. Whether you ride all year round or suspend the registration in winter, and how many kilometres you cover.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Can I suspend the registration of my motorcycle in winter?

Yes, a registered motorcycle can be suspended. The obligation under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) then lapses and you may no longer use the road. Cover for use on the road lapses with it. If you want fire, theft and storm damage cover to continue while the machine is in storage, that has to be stated expressly on the policy.

Is my motorcycle clothing covered?

Only through a separate section, and usually only where there is covered accident damage to the machine at the same time. A limit of its own applies and often an annual depreciation based on the date of purchase. So keep the receipts for your suit, helmet, gloves and boots; without evidence the payment is lower.

Am I insured on a track day?

No. Use on a circuit, training on a closed track and timed runs are excluded as standard, even where it is an instruction day with no competitive element. Separate one-day covers exist for such days, which you take out in advance. Arrange that before the day itself, because reporting it afterwards does not help.

What security does the insurer require?

Usually a certified lock, and on more expensive machines a tracking system with a current subscription. Increasingly there is also a requirement that the machine be secured to a fixed point or kept in a locked space. That requirement applies on the road as well. If the subscription for your tracking system lapses, the associated theft cover lapses with it.
