Insuring BMW motorcycles

A motorcycle policy insures the vehicle. Your helmet, suit and pannier system fall outside it as standard, and so does your own injury.

In brief

BMW's motorcycle range runs from a light single-cylinder to a tourer with panniers and a sports bike that belongs on a circuit. Insurers do not treat those as one make but as three risks. A tourer with an experienced rider and high mileage is assessed differently from a sports bike that mainly comes out at weekends. Power output, engine capacity and driving licence category together determine whether you end up on a standard rate.

The biggest misunderstanding lies not in the machine but in what hangs around it. Clothing, helmet, gloves, boots, a pannier or top box set and communication equipment are not part of the standard cover. They have to be declared and insured separately, with a limit of their own. Anyone who has to replace a complete suit and a helmet after a fall notices this only at the moment when it can no longer be arranged.

The second gap is your own injury. Third-party liability cover pays the other party, not you. If you come off with no other party involved, there is nothing without additional cover. Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code only gives you a claim where someone else made a mistake, and in a single-vehicle fall there is no such person.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Clothing, helmet and luggage are a separate section

A motorcycle policy covers the machine with the parts fitted at the factory. Your equipment falls outside it, as do loose panniers, tank bags and satnav or intercom equipment. Insurers offer an additional section for this with a limit and usually an excess. Keep the purchase invoices. When a claim is made you will be asked what the items were and how old they were. Without additional cover, your clothing after a fall is a cost of your own.

Your own injury is not included

On a motorcycle the rider is the most vulnerable component. Third-party liability cover is there for others. For yourself there is accident cover for occupants or indemnity cover for occupants, which also pays where you were at fault and in a single-vehicle fall. If you carry a pillion passenger, check whether that person is included. Without such an addition, permanent injury leaves you with only your disability or healthcare provision.

The lock is a condition of cover, not a piece of advice

For theft, insurers set specific requirements: an approved lock of a particular class, often a chain or shackle to a fixed point, and on the more expensive models a tracking system or locked storage. Those requirements appear on your policy schedule. If the machine is stolen while secured only by the steering lock, that is no longer a question of cover but an established breach of the conditions. Keep the certificate for your lock.

Season, standing idle and what is not included

As long as the registration has not been suspended, the duty to insure under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) applies all year round, even if the machine stands indoors all winter. Suspension is possible, but cover for theft and fire then lapses as well unless you arrange storage cover. Excluded remain: circuit and competition use, stunt riding, riding without the correct driving licence category, carrying passengers for hire or reward, and wear to chain, tyres and brakes.

Repairs and parts

Clothing, helmet and pannier system are not covered as standard and have to be declared separately.

Acceptance differs per insurer

Not every company applies the same policy for this make. With unusual versions, the question is not what it costs but who will accept it.

Motorcycle insurance

What does your premium depend on?

  • Type of motorcycle, engine capacity and power output. A tourer, a naked bike and a sports bike from the same stable fall into different classes.
  • Age and driving licence category. An A2 or unrestricted A licence, and how long you have held it, weighs heavily in the underwriting.
  • No-claims years. Years built up on a car usually do not count automatically towards a motorcycle policy.
  • Annual mileage and seasonal use. Riding only from spring to autumn gives a different premium picture from riding on through the winter.
  • Storage and lock class. Indoors under lock and key, chained to a fixed point, or outside on the street makes the difference in a theft.
  • Cover, excess and additional sections. Clothing cover and occupant insurance stand apart from the basic cover.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is my motorcycle clothing insured if I come off?

Only if you have taken out additional clothing cover. The basic cover includes the machine, not your suit, helmet, gloves or boots. The addition has a maximum amount and often a deduction for age. Keep purchase invoices, because they are asked for when a claim is made. A helmet that has hit the ground in a fall must always be replaced, even without visible damage.

Which lock does the insurer require?

That appears as a security clause on your policy schedule and differs per machine and per insurer. It usually involves an approved lock of a prescribed class, on more expensive models supplemented by a chain to a fixed point, an alarm or a tracking system. Check the clause before you leave the machine outside for the first time; compliance is the first thing asked about after a theft.

Am I covered if I come off with no other party involved?

For the machine itself only with own-damage cover; third-party, fire and theft covers external causes and not your own fall. For your injury you need accident or indemnity cover for occupants. Third-party liability cover does nothing in this situation, because it is there for others. In a single-vehicle fall in particular there is nobody to recover from under Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code.

Do I have to keep paying in winter while the machine stands indoors?

As long as the registration is active, the duty to insure applies and the premium continues. You can suspend the registration with the RDW (the Dutch vehicle authority). The obligation then lapses, but so does cover for fire and theft in your storage. Many insurers offer an adjusted winter cover under which only the own-damage part continues. Ask for that before you suspend, not afterwards.
