Insuring a hybrid car

On a hybrid it is not the combustion engine but the high-voltage part that determines what a repair costs and who is allowed to work on it.

In brief

A hybrid runs on two drivetrains under one registration. In insurance terms it is an ordinary passenger car: third-party liability cover is compulsory under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM), and alongside it you choose third-party, fire and theft or comprehensive cover. What is different sits under the floor and in the engine bay: a traction battery, orange high-voltage cables and an inverter together determine the cost of claims after a collision.

That battery pack also makes the car heavier than a comparable petrol version. Weight and specification determine which rating group your car falls into. So state whether you drive a mild, full or plug-in hybrid; that is part of your duty of disclosure when you apply (7:928 DCC), and an incorrect declaration leaves the insurer room to reduce a payout when you claim (7:930 DCC).

Not covered are loss of capacity and degradation of the battery, a battery pack you rent rather than own, and the charging installation at your home. For the first two, the route is the manufacturer's warranty or the rental contract; the third belongs on your buildings insurance.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Mild, full or plug-in is no detail

A mild hybrid only supports the combustion engine, a full hybrid can drive short distances on electricity and a plug-in charges at a charge point with a considerably larger battery pack. Those three versions differ in weight, in list price and above all in what damage to the drivetrain costs. State the exact version on the application form. If your policy schedule says something other than what you actually drive, that is the first thing the assessor looks at when you claim.

The high-voltage part determines who may repair it

Only a technician trained for the purpose may work on the orange wiring, the inverter and the battery pack. The system has to be isolated first. Insurers therefore steer towards a limited repair network. After a collision in which the pack may have been affected, the car is moreover often parked separately first to rule out a fire risk. Expect a longer turnaround and ask in advance how your insurer arranges a replacement vehicle and whether you keep free choice of repairer.

Battery damage and battery wear are two different things

If the pack is damaged by a covered cause, such as a collision, fire or an impact with the underside, that falls under your own-damage cover as part of the car. If the capacity declines because the pack is getting older, that is wear and no car policy pays for it. The same applies to a pack you lease or rent: that is someone else's property and falls outside your policy.

The cable, the wall charger and the portable charger sit on three policies

The charging cable you carry with you is insured as an accessory under many car policies, including while it is plugged into a public charge point. A wall charger fixed to your wall belongs with the building. A portable charger you keep in the garage falls under your home contents. Damage arising because you charge with a home-made extension arrangement or an unsuitable domestic lead is not paid under any of those three policies.

Who may carry out repairs

Only a repairer trained for the purpose may work on the high-voltage part. Insurers steer towards this, which limits the choice of body shops and sometimes lengthens the turnaround. Ask about it when comparing. With a leased car this is often already arranged.

Your no-claims years are held in Roy-data

You build up no-claims years for each year without an at-fault claim, and you usually lose five at once when a claim is paid. They are registered in Roy-data, the central system of Dutch insurers, and therefore transfer automatically to a new insurer. With most insurers, glass damage does not count.

Car insurance

Work out whether claiming pays

With an at-fault claim you usually lose five no-claims years and your premium rises for years, because you then climb back up step by step. For a small claim, paying yourself can be cheaper. Always ask for a damage assessment before you finalise a claim.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Version and battery capacity. Mild, full or plug-in hybrid. The pack determines the cost of claims on the drivetrain.
  • Unladen weight and rating group. The battery pack makes the car heavier than the petrol version and that moves the classification up.
  • List price including the battery pack. The battery counts towards the replacement value as new and therefore towards the basis for own-damage cover.
  • Availability of certified repair. Work on high voltage calls for a trained technician. That pushes up the labour rate.
  • Annual mileage and use. Commuting, business or second car. On a plug-in also whether you drive mainly on electricity.
  • Type of cover and excess. Third-party, fire and theft or comprehensive, and the amount you bear yourself on each claim.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is my battery pack insured after a collision?

Yes, as part of the car and provided you have own-damage cover. The pack is then treated like any other damaged part. If the assessment shows the pack is no longer safe, the replacement price counts towards the decision on whether the car is a total loss. Wear and declining capacity are expressly outside this.

Do I have to state which hybrid version I drive?

Yes. The version and battery capacity determine the weight, the value and the repair costs, and those are precisely the details on which the insurer accepts and rates the risk. It falls under your duty of disclosure when you apply. If you drive a plug-in while your policy states a mild hybrid, the insurer may adjust the payout to what it would have done had the declaration been correct.

Is my charging point covered by the car insurance?

No. A charge point fixed to the house or to a post on your own land is immovable property and belongs with your buildings insurance (opstalverzekering). A separate, portable charger falls under the home contents. Only the charging cable supplied with the car is included by many car insurers as an accessory, including away from the vehicle. Check for each policy which of the three routes applies.

May any body shop work on my hybrid?

On ordinary bodywork yes, on the high-voltage part no. That calls for separate training and tools, and insurers work with a limited list of repairers. That can restrict your free choice and lengthen the turnaround. When comparing, ask how the repair network is arranged and what happens if the nearest certified firm is far away.
