With this product you buy a defined period. You give the departure date and the return date, you pay a premium per day or per trip, and the cover applies only between those two moments. That makes the policy suitable for anyone who goes away once or twice a year, but it also makes it unforgiving in its administration: a wrong date means an uninsured day.
You can only insure something while the event is still uncertain. A travel policy you try to take out while you are already on your way or already at your destination is therefore not an option. Extending during the trip is usually only possible if circumstances beyond your control prevent you from returning and you report this in advance.
If you travel more than twice a year, the sum tips over and a continuous travel insurance is usually cheaper and more convenient. We work out that tipping point for you and compare the cover itself as well, because a single-trip policy is not automatically narrower than an annual contract.
We compare your travel insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

Get coveredThe structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
The basic cover insures the core of your single-trip travel insurance. We show what Nationale-Nederlanden and other insurers offer within it.
On top of that to medical assistance, also luggage, accidents, legal expenses and (optionally) winter sports.
The most complete cover. We compare Nationale-Nederlanden's extended version with the market.
What is covered
| Situation | Basic | With winter sports module |
|---|---|---|
| Theft of luggage from a locked space | Provided that | Provided that |
| Repatriation after an accident | Yes | Yes |
| Medical expenses abroad | Provided that | Provided that |
| Damage to or theft of hired ski equipment | No | Yes |
| An accident while skiing off-piste | No | Provided that |
| A trip to an area with a negative travel advisory | No | No |
Travel insurance reimburses medical expenses as a supplement to your health insurance, not as a replacement for it. Winter sports and special sports are excluded as standard and require a separate module. A negative travel advisory from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs generally excludes cover for that area; report a claim as soon as reasonably possible (7:941 DCC).

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.
We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.
You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.
We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.
We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
Insurance presumes an uncertain event. If you are already on the plane or at your destination, departure is no longer uncertain and no insurer will accept the application. Retrospective cover does not exist with this product. If you only notice at the airport that you are uninsured, the only route is a policy with a start date in the future, which does not cover the trip already under way.
Cover runs from the moment you leave your home address until you return there, including the outward and return journey. If you book a flight that lands after midnight, or drive to the airport a day early, count those days in. A policy that is one day too short leaves you uninsured at precisely the moment when delays, extra overnight stays and missed connections occur.
If a strike, a natural disaster, a stay in hospital or the failure of transport prevents you from returning on time, most policies extend the cover by the length of that delay. The condition is that you call the emergency assistance centre and obtain permission. If you decide yourself to stay a week longer because you are enjoying it, that extra period is not covered and no retrospective extension is possible.
Cancellation is a separate cover which you have to take out shortly after booking. If you forget, it cannot be added to a single-trip travel policy later. Beyond that, stays for paid work or manual labour, travel to areas with negative travel advice, and winter sports or diving without the relevant module remain outside the cover. Report a claim in good time; Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code attaches consequences to a late notification.
This is what people ask us most.
No. The trip has then begun and the event is no longer uncertain, so insurers will not accept the application. Even a policy starting tomorrow does not cover the current trip. If you find that you have travelled uninsured, the most you can do is arrange cover for a future trip. For the present one you have to fall back on your health insurance and the carrier.
As a rule, no. The premium is calculated over the period you stated and the cover was available throughout that period. Only if the trip has not yet started and you end the policy within the cooling-off period or before the start date is a refund usual. Check the provision on early termination before you book.
Yes, both. Cover begins when you leave your home address and ends when you return there, so travel days must fall within the insured period. If your flight lands after midnight, that arrival falls on the next calendar day and you need that day as well. One extra day costs little and prevents a gap.
Roughly as soon as you make more than two trips a year or regularly book short breaks. Besides the price, convenience matters: with an annual contract you cannot forget a date. If you make a single long trip, a single-trip policy is often better, because a continuous policy has a maximum uninterrupted trip length that can cut such a trip short.
Every situation is different. For these situations we have a separate page.
