In brief

You are not insuring a trip but an amount: the sum you lose if you call off the booking. Only what is in that booking and for which the provider makes a cancellation charge counts. Expenses you made around it yourself, such as parking at the airport, a concert ticket or a day trip once you are there, remain outside the payment.

That makes the question of what kind of booking you have more important than the name of the insurer. A package holiday is one booking with a scale of charges. A self-assembled trip consists of a flight, a hire car or hired camper van and accommodation, each with its own conditions and each with its own moment from which calling off no longer produces anything.

If you book several trips a year, the annual form is more practical: the continuous cancellation insurance through Unigarant. Background on the grounds for cover can be found in everything you need to know about cancellation insurance.

Independent, personal, sorted quickly

Through Finass or direct with Unigarant?

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

Basic cover

The basic cover insures the core of your single-trip cancellation insurance. We show what Unigarant and other insurers offer within it.

  • Luggage & travel documents abroad
  • SOS emergency assistance centre
  • Money & payment cards while travelling
  • Help in case of illness or accident

Extended cover

On top of that to medical assistance, also luggage, accidents, legal expenses and (optionally) winter sports.

  • Luggage & travel documents
  • Money & payment cards while travelling
  • Travel legal expenses cover
  • Money & payment card insurance

Complete package

The most complete cover. We compare the extended version from Unigarant with the market.

  • Replacement transport
  • Cancellation can be included
  • Special sports
  • Higher luggage cover

What is covered

SituationBasicWith winter sports module
Theft of luggage from a locked spaceProvided thatProvided that
Repatriation after an accidentYesYes
Medical expenses abroadProvided thatProvided that
Damage to or theft of hired ski equipmentNoYes
An accident while skiing off-pisteNoProvided that
A trip to an area with a negative travel advisoryNoNo

Travel insurance reimburses medical expenses as a supplement to your health insurance, not as a replacement for it. Winter sports and special sports are excluded as standard and require a separate module. A negative travel advisory from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs generally excludes cover for that area; report a claim as soon as reasonably possible (7:941 DCC).

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Sum insured per person. The trip cost you record is the basis for calculation; insuring for too little leads to underinsurance.
  • Number of people on the booking. Every insured person on the reservation counts separately towards the premium.
  • Term until the departure date. The longer the period between booking and departure, the longer the risk of dropping out runs.
  • Type of booking. A package holiday, a separate flight, a hired camper van or accommodation each have a different cancellation scale.
  • Cover option chosen. Standard cancellation, or an extended variant that also reimburses curtailment and a pro rata return.
  • Age of the insured persons. With older travellers the chance of dropping out through illness is higher, and that is reflected in the rate.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

A package holiday or separate components

With a package holiday the trip cost is one amount and the payment follows the tour operator's cancellation scale. If you put the trip together yourself, the flight, the accommodation and the hire car each have their own rules. A flight ticket is often not refundable at all, so that the full ticket price is your loss from the day you book. Declare all the components, therefore, and not just the most expensive one.

Curtailment and returning home early

If you have to interrupt the trip because of illness, an accident or a death in the family, the cover usually reimburses the days you did not use pro rata, counted from the moment you return home or are admitted to hospital. The cost of the early journey home itself belongs to the travel insurance and not to the cancellation cover; see the single-trip travel insurance through Unigarant. Two policies, and therefore two notifications.

The travel party stands or falls together

If you cancel because a fellow traveller drops out, that is only covered where that person is on the same booking or has been declared as an insured person. If you travel as two families on two separate bookings, those count as two separate cases and the second family may be left without cover. Declare the whole party when you apply; adding someone afterwards is not possible.

What is not included

Not covered are: calling off a trip because of negative travel advice, fear, changed plans or pressure of work; resigning of your own accord; costs for which the provider makes no cancellation charge; booking and reservation fees; and holiday days lost. If the provider goes bankrupt, that is a matter for the travel industry guarantee scheme. Whatever you recover elsewhere is deducted under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Does the insurance reimburse the whole trip cost?

Only the part the provider actually charges as cancellation charges, up to the sum insured. If you call the trip off well before departure that is often a limited part; shortly before departure it rises to almost the whole sum. Booking and reservation fees and additional expenses you incurred yourself remain outside the payment, even if you do not get them back.

What if only my fellow traveller drops out?

That depends on whether that person is on the same booking or has been declared as an insured person. If so, cancellation by the whole party is usually covered. If your fellow traveller is on a booking of their own and is not insured with you, you are left with your own cancellation charges. So declare the party in full.

Can I insure a separate flight or a hired camper van as well?

Yes, provided you declare the amount and cancellation charges apply to it. Note that many flight tickets are not refundable at all. The full ticket price is then at your risk from the day you book. For hired camper vans and holiday homes the scale is set out in the rental conditions. Insure all the components together, otherwise you are only covering part of your loss.

I have already booked; can I still take out cover now?

Often you can, but the later you take out cover, the more weight Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code carries. At the outset you must declare what you know and what matters to the insurer. If illness, a planned procedure or a threatened redundancy was already in play at that moment, the insurer may pay less or nothing under Article 7:930 DCC.
