In brief

With a separate travel policy, the travel dates are fixed before the cover starts. The insurance must therefore start before departure and the term must cover the whole trip, from the moment you leave your front door until you return home. If you are already on the way, the policy can no longer be taken out: the risk has then begun, and that is one of the few hard boundaries in this product.

Cancellation cover has a timeline of its own. It must be taken out within a few days of booking, and the covered cause must have occurred after the insurance started. A condition that was already known, a travel advisory that had already changed colour or a dismissal already under way gives no cover. Only the reasons expressly set out in the conditions give a right to payment.

The term is also limited quite literally. If the trip overruns because of a cancelled flight or a hospital admission, most conditions extend the cover automatically for the duration of that delay, but only where the delay is beyond your control. We line up the travel dates, booking date and modules, or advise a a continuous policy if you go away more often.

Through Finass or direct with De Goudse?

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

Basic cover

The basic cover insures the core of your single-trip travel insurance. We set out what De Goudse and other insurers offer within it.

  • Luggage & travel documents abroad
  • SOS emergency assistance centre
  • Money & payment cards while travelling
  • Help in case of illness or accident

Extended cover

On top of that to medical assistance, also luggage, accidents, legal expenses and (optionally) winter sports.

  • Luggage & travel documents
  • Money & payment cards while travelling
  • Travel legal expenses cover
  • Money & payment card insurance

Complete package

The most complete cover. We compare De Goudse's extended version with the market.

  • Replacement transport
  • Cancellation can be included
  • Special sports
  • Higher luggage cover

What is covered

SituationBasicWith winter sports module
Theft of luggage from a locked spaceProvided thatProvided that
Repatriation after an accidentYesYes
Medical expenses abroadProvided thatProvided that
Damage to or theft of hired ski equipmentNoYes
An accident while skiing off-pisteNoProvided that
A trip to an area with a negative travel advisoryNoNo

Travel insurance reimburses medical expenses as a supplement to your health insurance, not as a replacement for it. Winter sports and special sports are excluded as standard and require a separate module. A negative travel advisory from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs generally excludes cover for that area; report a claim as soon as reasonably possible (7:941 DCC).

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Length of the trip in days. With a single-trip policy the term itself is the basis for calculating the premium.
  • Destination and territorial scope. Europe or worldwide is chosen per trip, and the destination determines the level of medical costs.
  • Number of people travelling with you. Everyone going on the trip must be named separately on the policy.
  • Cancellation cover or not. The cancellation module follows the trip cost and is therefore often the heaviest part.
  • Nature of the activities. Winter sports, diving or climbing call for a separate module and increase the risk of the trip.
  • Value of the luggage taken. If you travel with equipment or gear, that determines whether the standard luggage module is sufficient.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The start date and the door-to-door trip

The cover starts on the date and time stated on the policy, and in the conditions the trip runs from leaving home until returning there. Anyone who takes out the policy on the day of departure while already on the way to the airport faces a risk that has begun. With an early flight, count the journey to the airport as well. It falls within the trip and therefore within the term.

Cancellation depends on the booking date

The cancellation module must be taken out within a short period after booking. If you take it out later, the module is usually refused, or it does not apply to causes that were already an issue at that time. The covered reasons are exhaustively listed: death, serious illness, an accident, and usually involuntary unemployment as well. Anything not on the list, such as a change of plan, gives no right to payment.

Extension when you are delayed

If a covered cause prevents you from returning on time, for example a hospital admission or a cancelled return flight, under most conditions the cover runs on automatically until you are home. If you choose to stay longer yourself, that is not an extension but an uninsured period. So always report a threatened overrun to the emergency assistance centre before the end date has passed.

What a separate policy does not solve

Business trips fall outside personal travel insurance. There is a commercial version for those. Trips to areas with a negative travel advisory are excluded, as is damage from taking part in risky sports without the relevant module. It also holds that luggage left unattended, loss without an identifiable event and costs your health insurance already pays are not for this policy's account.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Can I still take out cover once I have left?

No. Travel insurance covers a risk that has not yet begun; once the trip has started, the policy can no longer be laid over it. A policy applied for on the day of departure while you are on the way also fails on that point. So arrange the cover when you book, or at any rate a few days before departure.

Until when can I add cancellation cover?

Within a short period after booking the trip. That period is set out in the conditions and is applied strictly. After that the module usually can no longer be taken out, or it does not apply to causes that were already known at the time. An illness already diagnosed before you took out cover therefore gives no right to payment of the trip cost.

My return flight has been cancelled. Am I still insured?

Under most conditions the cover runs on automatically until you are home, provided the delay is beyond your control. Do report it to the emergency assistance centre before the end date passes. The extra costs of accommodation and transport are only paid if travel delay cover has been included. The carrier also has obligations of its own which are called on first.

Is a single-trip policy suitable for a business trip?

Not without more. Personal travel policies exclude trips that are predominantly business in character, or cover only the stay and not the work. For attending a conference, assembly work or client visits abroad, business travel insurance is the right form, in which the business equipment taken along and liability during the work are also arranged separately.
