In brief

The difference from a single-trip travel policy is not the cover but the rhythm. You take it out once and then no longer have to arrange anything per booking. That works well as soon as you are away more than twice a year, including weekends, city breaks and a week of winter sports.

Two provisions determine whether the policy fits your situation: the maximum duration per trip and whether overnight stays in the Netherlands count. If you stay away for six weeks at a stretch while the policy is set at thirty days, the tail end of that trip falls outside the cover. A long trip or a sabbatical calls for a separate solution.

Medical expenses are supplementary here: your health insurer remains the first payer. If you travel to countries with a fundamentally different cost level, also compare the travel insurance through Chubb, which is built up differently on that point.

Independent, personal, sorted quickly

We compare your travel insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

Through Finass or direct with Allianz?

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

Basic cover

The basic cover insures the core of your continuous travel insurance. We set out what Allianz and other insurers offer within it.

  • Luggage & travel documents abroad
  • SOS emergency assistance centre
  • Money & payment cards while travelling
  • Help in case of illness or accident

Extended cover

On top of that to medical assistance, also luggage, accidents, legal expenses and (optionally) winter sports.

  • Luggage & travel documents
  • Money & payment cards while travelling
  • Travel legal expenses cover
  • Money & payment card insurance

Complete package

The most complete cover. We compare Allianz's extended version with the market.

  • Replacement transport
  • Cancellation can be included
  • Special sports
  • Higher luggage cover

What is covered

SituationBasicWith winter sports module
Theft of luggage from a locked spaceProvided thatProvided that
Repatriation after an accidentYesYes
Medical expenses abroadProvided thatProvided that
Damage to or theft of hired ski equipmentNoYes
An accident while skiing off-pisteNoProvided that
A trip to an area with a negative travel advisoryNoNo

Travel insurance reimburses medical expenses as a supplement to your health insurance, not as a replacement for it. Winter sports and special sports are excluded as standard and require a separate module. A negative travel advisory from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs generally excludes cover for that area; report a claim as soon as reasonably possible (7:941 DCC).

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Area of cover. Europe or worldwide; outside Europe, healthcare costs are structurally higher.
  • Maximum length of each trip. A longer permitted trip length per trip increases the premium.
  • Number of people insured. Travelling alone, as a couple or family cover with children.
  • Modules chosen. Winter sports, special sports and cancellation are insured separately.
  • Medical expenses included. The supplementary medical cover is a separate choice alongside your health insurance.
  • Luggage sum insured and excess. Higher luggage limits and a lower excess make the policy more expensive.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The maximum trip length is the most important limit

Every continuous policy has a maximum number of consecutive days per trip. If you stay away longer, the cover stops on the day the limit is exceeded: even though the premium simply carries on. If you are planning a long tour, a winter abroad or a period of work overseas, have the trip length increased beforehand or take out a separate policy for that one trip. Extending afterwards is not possible.

Medical expenses: supplementary, not a substitute

Your basic health insurance pays for treatment abroad up to the Dutch rate at most. The difference from the local bill is where the travel cover starts. It is almost always a condition that you call the emergency assistance centre before you are admitted or transported. If you do not, the payment can be limited. Also report the event as soon as possible, as prescribed by Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires.

Luggage has limits and rules of conduct

Separate maximum amounts apply to jewellery, watches, photographic and computer equipment, which are far lower than the total luggage amount. Not covered are items you left unattended on the beach or in a tent, valuable equipment in checked luggage, and theft from a car without signs of forced entry. Wear, scratches and damage from an inherent defect also fall outside. Keep purchase receipts; without them the value cannot be shown.

Winter sports and cancellation are choices

Skiing, snowboarding, diving and climbing are not in the standard cover but in a module. The same applies to cancellation. With cancellation the timing also counts: a condition or family circumstance that was already known when you booked is a pre-existing circumstance and falls outside the cover. Travelling to an area with a negative travel advisory is an exclusion that insurers apply strictly.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Do I need medical cover in addition to my health insurance?

Within Europe often only to a limited extent, outside it certainly. Your basic health insurance pays up to the Dutch rate; whatever a hospital charges above that locally is otherwise at your expense. Repatriation and transport of a sick travelling companion are also not covered by health insurance. We look at your destinations and at what your supplementary health policy already arranges.

How long may one trip last?

That is stated as a maximum number of consecutive days on your policy schedule. If you exceed it, the cover stops on the day the limit is exceeded, even though the policy continues. If you know in advance that a trip will be longer, have the trip length adjusted or take out a separate policy for that trip. Extending afterwards is not possible.

Are winter sports automatically included?

No. Winter sports are a separate module, as are diving, climbing and other higher-risk sports. Without that module, a broken leg on the piste and the associated recovery and transport costs are not covered. Taking part in competitions and descents off marked pistes often remain excluded even with the module.

Is cancellation part of the continuous cover?

Only if you have chosen that module. Cancellation pays for the trip cost you do not get back in the event of illness, a death in the family or involuntary unemployment. What is decisive is whether the cause was already known or foreseeable when you booked; pre-existing circumstances are excluded. So take out cancellation cover when you book, not just before departure.
