Continuous travel insurance through Nationale-Nederlanden

Continuous travel insurance runs all year, but covers only a limited number of consecutive days per trip. It is precisely that limit which determines whether you are still insured on the longest trip of the year.

In brief

The feature of a continuous policy is that you do not have to think about each trip: every trip within the contract year is automatically covered, from the moment you leave your home address until you are back home. Against that stands a hard limit, the maximum continuous length of each trip. That number of days is stated on your policy schedule and is the most important choice with this product.

The second condition is that you live in the Netherlands and are registered here. The policy covers trips from the Netherlands, not a stay elsewhere. If you go to work or live abroad for a longer period, this is not the right product and you are more likely to need insurance for working abroad.

Cancellation is not included as standard. That is a separate module or a separate policy with its own rules about when it must be taken out. You can read about that on the page about cancellation insurance. With this product we compare above all on trip length, territorial scope and which modules are included as standard.

Through Finass or direct with Nationale-Nederlanden?

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

Basic cover

The basic cover insures the core of your continuous travel insurance. We set out what Nationale-Nederlanden and other insurers offer within it.

  • Luggage & travel documents abroad
  • SOS emergency assistance centre
  • Money & payment cards while travelling
  • Help in case of illness or accident

Extended cover

On top of that to medical assistance, also luggage, accidents, legal expenses and (optionally) winter sports.

  • Luggage & travel documents
  • Money & payment cards while travelling
  • Travel legal expenses cover
  • Money & payment card insurance

Complete package

The most complete cover. We compare Nationale-Nederlanden's extended version with the market.

  • Replacement transport
  • Cancellation can be included
  • Special sports
  • Higher luggage cover

What is covered

SituationBasicWith winter sports module
Theft of luggage from a locked spaceProvided thatProvided that
Repatriation after an accidentYesYes
Medical expenses abroadProvided thatProvided that
Damage to or theft of hired ski equipmentNoYes
An accident while skiing off-pisteNoProvided that
A trip to an area with a negative travel advisoryNoNo

Travel insurance reimburses medical expenses as a supplement to your health insurance, not as a replacement for it. Winter sports and special sports are excluded as standard and require a separate module. A negative travel advisory from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs generally excludes cover for that area; report a claim as soon as reasonably possible (7:941 DCC).

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Maximum length of each trip. The longer the unbroken period you insure, the higher the annual premium.
  • Area of cover. Europe is cheaper than worldwide; healthcare costs at the destination are the largest cost item.
  • Number of insured persons on the policy. Family cover with children living at home costs more than cover for one or two people.
  • Medical expenses module. Whether or not you include the supplement to your health insurance makes a noticeable difference to the annual premium.
  • Winter sports and special sports. These modules increase the premium for the whole year, even if you only go for a week.
  • Cancellation module or not. Continuous cancellation cover is calculated on your annual trip spend and is often the most expensive part.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The maximum trip length per trip is the key choice

Continuous does not mean unlimited. Every policy states a maximum number of consecutive days per trip, and that maximum differs considerably by provider. If you stay away longer, with most insurers the cover ends the moment the period expires, in the middle of your trip. So do not look at your average holiday but at the longest trip you realistically make.

The cover depends on your Dutch home address

Under the conditions, a trip starts when you leave your home address in the Netherlands and ends when you return there. Anyone who deregisters, leaves permanently for another country or uses a second home as their point of departure falls outside that description. Moving abroad is a change you must declare. If it turns out afterwards that you no longer lived in the Netherlands, the insurer can refuse cover.

Medical expenses are supplementary, not a substitute

The medical expenses module works on top of your Dutch health insurance. The basic health insurance pays for treatment abroad up to the rate usual in the Netherlands. The travel insurance tops up the difference and arranges assistance, transport and repatriation. If you no longer have Dutch health insurance, that underlying layer falls away and the module covers considerably less than you expect.

What an annual policy does not automatically include

Winter sports, diving, climbing and other special sports are only covered with the relevant module. The same applies to legal expenses while travelling, a replacement vehicle and cancellation. Also outside the cover are stays for paid work or manual work, trips to areas with a negative travel advisory, and damage that already existed on departure. The policy renews automatically and after the first year can be cancelled on any day.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

What happens if my trip lasts longer than the trip length insured?

With most policies the cover stops as soon as the maximum unbroken trip length is reached, even if you are still on the way. From that moment you are uninsured for luggage, assistance and medical expenses. If you know in advance that a trip will be longer, declare it; sometimes a temporary increase is possible, otherwise you take out a separate policy for that trip.

Am I also insured on a holiday in the Netherlands?

Usually only where there is a booked stay with at least one overnight stay, for example a cottage or campsite with a booking confirmation. A day out does not count. Within the Netherlands your medical expenses are already covered by your health insurance, so the added value here lies mainly in luggage, assistance and legal expenses.

Do I need this in addition to my health insurance?

The basic health insurance pays for treatment abroad up to the Dutch rate, and in countries with high healthcare costs that falls short. A health insurer moreover does not arrange an air ambulance, transport for an injured travelling companion or alternative accommodation. In reality that assistance element is more often the reason for having a travel policy than the difference in costs itself.

Can I cancel if I do not travel for a year?

After the first contract year, continuous travel insurance can be cancelled on any day, subject to the notice period in the conditions. In the first year you are tied to the term. If you travel irregularly, the sum is simple: with one or two short trips a year, a single-trip policy per trip is often better value than an annual contract.
