In brief

A single-trip policy has a start date and an end date and covers exactly the trip in between. That is its strength and at the same time its weak point: you pay only for the days you are away, but you fall outside it as soon as the trip starts earlier or ends later than stated on the policy schedule. When you take it out therefore weighs just as heavily as the cover you choose.

We use this product from ASR for people who travel once or at most twice a year, and for a trip that does not fit within an existing annual policy. If you go away more often, the sum of separate policies usually works out unfavourably and we discuss continuous travel insurance through ASR.

Calling the trip off is a different product. Travel insurance pays nothing when you do not make the trip. For that there is single-trip cancellation insurance through ASR, which you must moreover arrange shortly after booking.

Independent, personal, sorted quickly

We compare your travel insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

Basic cover

The basic cover insures the core of your single-trip travel insurance. We set out what ASR and other insurers offer within it.

  • Luggage & travel documents abroad
  • SOS emergency assistance centre
  • Money & payment cards while travelling
  • Help in case of illness or accident

Extended cover

On top of that to medical assistance, also luggage, accidents, legal expenses and (optionally) winter sports.

  • Luggage & travel documents
  • Money & payment cards while travelling
  • Travel legal expenses cover
  • Money & payment card insurance

Complete package

The most complete cover. We compare ASR's extended version with the market.

  • Replacement transport
  • Cancellation can be included
  • Special sports
  • Higher luggage cover

What is covered

SituationBasicWith winter sports module
Theft of luggage from a locked spaceProvided thatProvided that
Repatriation after an accidentYesYes
Medical expenses abroadProvided thatProvided that
Damage to or theft of hired ski equipmentNoYes
An accident while skiing off-pisteNoProvided that
A trip to an area with a negative travel advisoryNoNo

Travel insurance reimburses medical expenses as a supplement to your health insurance, not as a replacement for it. Winter sports and special sports are excluded as standard and require a separate module. A negative travel advisory from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs generally excludes cover for that area; report a claim as soon as reasonably possible (7:941 DCC).

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Number of days travelling. The premium is calculated per day. The days of the outward and return journeys count in full.
  • Destination. Healthcare costs differ considerably by country. A trip outside Europe weighs considerably more heavily.
  • Number and age of the travellers. Everyone travelling with you is insured separately; different rates sometimes apply to older travellers.
  • Sections chosen. The basic cover only, or luggage, accidents, legal expenses and a replacement vehicle as well.
  • Winter sports or special sports. To be ticked per trip and rated separately, even where you ski for only part of the trip.
  • Excess on baggage. An excess per event on the luggage section lowers the premium for the whole trip.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Take it out before departure, not on the way

A single-trip policy must start before you depart. If you are already on the way, virtually no insurer will still accept the application, and events before the start date fall outside the cover in any event. So take out cover as soon as the travel dates are fixed. We set the start date on the day of departure and the end date on the day you get home, with the outward and return journeys included.

Back a day later is a day uninsured

A delay, a cancelled flight or a hospital admission can push your journey home past the end date. Many policies extend the cover automatically where the delay is through no fault of yours, but that extension is capped and not a given. If you are planning tightly, choose an end date with a day to spare. Otherwise, extension is only possible before the original end date and not after something has happened en route.

Holiday or work

Single-trip travel insurance covers holidays. If you travel for your work, the work itself is excluded: assembling, installing, doing jobs or performing falls outside the cover, even where the trip otherwise looks like a holiday. For work there is business travel insurance. Your employer's equipment is usually not covered either; business assets belong on the commercial policy.

What is excluded

Not covered are: costs arising from something that was already an issue on the start date, damage under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and injury while diving, climbing or riding a motorcycle for which you do not hold a licence. Luggage left visibly in a parked car also falls outside, as do trips to an area with a negative travel advisory. Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code excludes intent and recklessness.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Can I still take out cover if I am already travelling?

As a rule, no. Insurers want the cover to start before departure, because otherwise it cannot be established whether something has already happened en route. A few providers accept an application from abroad with a waiting period of a few days, but whatever was already an issue at that moment remains excluded. So arrange the policy together with the booking.

What happens if I stay away longer?

If you stay longer voluntarily, you must extend the policy before the end date passes. After that it is no longer possible. If the delay is through no fault of yours, for example because of a cancelled flight or an admission to hospital, the cover usually runs on for a limited number of days. Report that situation to the emergency assistance centre immediately, so that the extension is recorded.

Is single-trip cover cheaper than an annual policy?

For a single holiday a year, usually yes. From around two or three trips a year, the sum of separate policies climbs above a continuous policy, certainly where you buy the same modules each time. We set your travel pattern of last year alongside both forms and calculate which is the more efficient in your case.

Are my travelling companions covered?

Only the people named on the policy schedule. You can include friends or family who are not part of your household, provided you give their names and dates of birth when you apply. Anyone who joins later is not covered. If children who are not yours are travelling with you, say so; otherwise there is no basis for payment in the event of illness or an accident.
