Cancellation insurance reimburses the costs the tour operator or provider charges you when you call off or cut short a trip for a covered reason. It does not pay for the trip itself, but for the cancellation charges under the scale in the booking conditions: the closer to the departure date, the larger the share you lose.
With this product the moment you take out cover is decisive. The policy belongs to the booking and has to follow closely on it. If you only take it out weeks later, the reason you cancel may already have been known at that point. Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code requires you to declare at the outset what you know and what matters to the insurer. If you do not, the insurer may, under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code pay out less or nothing at all.
If you book more than once a year, an annual form is easier: see the continuous cancellation insurance through Unigarant. General background can be found in everything you need to know about cancellation insurance.
We compare your cancellation insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.
Cancellation insurance
Compare
Get coveredThe structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
The basic cover insures the core of your single-trip cancellation insurance. We show what ASR and other insurers offer within it.
On top of that to medical assistance, also luggage, accidents, legal expenses and (optionally) winter sports.
The most complete cover. We compare ASR's extended version with the market.
What is covered
| Situation | Basic | With winter sports module |
|---|---|---|
| Theft of luggage from a locked space | Provided that | Provided that |
| Repatriation after an accident | Yes | Yes |
| Medical expenses abroad | Provided that | Provided that |
| Damage to or theft of hired ski equipment | No | Yes |
| An accident while skiing off-piste | No | Provided that |
| A trip to an area with a negative travel advisory | No | No |
Travel insurance reimburses medical expenses as a supplement to your health insurance, not as a replacement for it. Winter sports and special sports are excluded as standard and require a separate module. A negative travel advisory from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs generally excludes cover for that area; report a claim as soon as reasonably possible (7:941 DCC).

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.
We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.
You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.
We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.
We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
If you were already under treatment on the day the insurance took effect, if a procedure was planned or if a close relative was seriously ill, cancelling for that reason is rarely covered. That is not small print but the heart of Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code: the insurer must know what you know. If you are in doubt, declare it in writing when you apply, so that it is on record afterwards what was disclosed.
Cover usually applies to death, serious illness or an accident involving you, your family or someone close to you, involuntary redundancy, complications in pregnancy and serious damage to your home. Not covered are changed plans, negative travel advice, fear of travelling, resigning of your own accord and a resit. If the provider itself collapses, that is a matter for the travel industry guarantee scheme.
Call off the trip with the provider as soon as the reason is known and report the cancellation to the insurer. Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires you to do so as soon as reasonably possible. If you wait too long, the cancellation charges rise further and the insurer will pay the amount that applied at the right moment. Keep the booking confirmation, the cancellation invoice and the medical certificate.
Outside the payment fall: holiday days taken, costs for which the provider makes no cancellation charge, booking and reservation fees, and expenses you incurred yourself that are not part of the booking, such as parking or a train ticket to the airport. Anything you recover through another insurance policy or through the provider is deducted; Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code does not allow double payment.
This is what people ask us most.
As soon as possible, preferably on the day you book. Many insurers accept a short period after that, but as time passes the chance grows that you know something you should have declared under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code. If you take out cover later and the reason for cancelling turns out to have been known at the time, the insurer may reduce or refuse the payment.
You get back the cancellation charges the provider actually makes, up to the sum insured. If you cancel well before departure that is often only part of the trip cost. If you cancel shortly before departure it rises to almost the whole amount. Booking and reservation fees and additional expenses you incurred yourself remain outside the payment.
Only with the extended variant that covers curtailment as well. That reimburses the days you did not use pro rata, counted from the moment you return home or are admitted to hospital. The cost of the early journey home and of the treatment itself belongs to travel insurance, not to the cancellation cover. Those are two policies and therefore two notifications.
No. A colour code from Buitenlandse Zaken (the Dutch ministry of foreign affairs) is not a covered reason. The insurance looks at personal circumstances such as illness, an accident or a death. If the operator itself cancels the trip, it must refund you under the travel contract. If the trip goes ahead and you do not, the costs are for your own account.
Every situation is different. For these situations we have a separate page.
