Continuous travel insurance for students through Nationale-Nederlanden

For an ordinary travel policy, a semester or work placement abroad is no longer a trip: it comes down to the maximum unbroken length of stay, to your registration in the Netherlands and to whether a placement counts as work.

In brief

This version exists because a study stay conflicts with the limit in an ordinary annual policy. Where regular continuous cover ends a trip after a limited number of consecutive days, a student version stretches that period to a whole academic year or semester. Conditions come with that: enrolment at an educational institution, an age limit and a study stay as the purpose of the departure.

The second fault line is the work placement. Studying is not working, but a placement often factually is, and many policies exclude manual work and paid work. If your placement is in a laboratory, in construction, in healthcare or at a shipyard, have it confirmed in advance that those activities are covered.

The third question is where you belong administratively. If you remain registered in the Netherlands, your health insurance remains the underlying layer and the travel policy supplements it. If you deregister, that underlying layer falls away and insurance for students abroad fits better than travel insurance.

Through Finass or direct with Nationale-Nederlanden?

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

Basic cover

The basic cover insures the core of your continuous travel insurance for students. We set out what Nationale-Nederlanden and other insurers offer within it.

  • Luggage & travel documents abroad
  • SOS emergency assistance centre
  • Money & payment cards while travelling
  • Help in case of illness or accident

Extended cover

On top of that to medical assistance, also luggage, accidents, legal expenses and (optionally) winter sports.

  • Luggage & travel documents
  • Money & payment cards while travelling
  • Travel legal expenses cover
  • Money & payment card insurance

Complete package

The most complete cover. We compare Nationale-Nederlanden's extended version with the market.

  • Replacement transport
  • Cancellation can be included
  • Special sports
  • Higher luggage cover

What is covered

SituationBasicWith winter sports module
Theft of luggage from a locked spaceProvided thatProvided that
Repatriation after an accidentYesYes
Medical expenses abroadProvided thatProvided that
Damage to or theft of hired ski equipmentNoYes
An accident while skiing off-pisteNoProvided that
A trip to an area with a negative travel advisoryNoNo

Travel insurance reimburses medical expenses as a supplement to your health insurance, not as a replacement for it. Winter sports and special sports are excluded as standard and require a separate module. A negative travel advisory from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs generally excludes cover for that area; report a claim as soon as reasonably possible (7:941 DCC).

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The length of stay is what this version is about

An ordinary continuous policy cuts a trip off as soon as the maximum unbroken trip length expires, and an exchange semester passes that limit effortlessly. The student version extends that period, but not indefinitely: here too the conditions state a maximum, often linked to the length of the study programme. State the actual start and end dates of your stay, including the weeks of travel you plan around it.

A placement often counts as work

Many travel policies exclude paid work and manual work. An unpaid research placement behind a desk rarely falls under it, but work with machinery, in healthcare, in construction or at height does. On top of that, the placement provider has a duty of care of its own comparable to Article 7:658 of the Dutch Civil Code: if you are injured during placement work, that party is often the first port of call, not your travel policy.

Your health insurance remains the basis

The travel insurance supplements what your Dutch basic health insurance pays abroad and arranges assistance and repatriation. If you remain registered in the municipal personal records database and keep your health insurance, that structure is sound. If you study outside the European Union, find out in advance which treatment your health insurer still pays for there. The answer determines how large the gap is that the travel policy has to fill.

What is not included

Luggage means luggage you travel with, not home contents: the furnishing of your room or studio abroad falls outside the cover. Liability towards others is not included either; separate liability insurance is needed for that. Tuition fees you lose if you break off your studies, extreme sports and adventurous excursions without a module, and stays in areas with a negative travel advisory also stay out of the picture.

Worldwide assistance

Cancellation

What does your premium depend on?

  • Length of the study stay. A semester is rated differently from a full academic year or a two-year master's programme.
  • Country of the educational institution. Within the European Union, healthcare and assistance costs are lower than at distant destinations.
  • A placement component or not. A placement with physical work requires acceptance in advance and sometimes a loading or separate cover.
  • Including medical expenses in the cover. This module is decisive as soon as you study outside the European Union and your basic health insurance pays little.
  • Luggage sum for laptop and equipment. Students take relatively a lot of electronics with them, for which a sub-limit and sometimes additional cover applies.
  • Sports and excursions. Diving, climbing, skiing and adventurous trips during the stay call for a separate module.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Can I use this to study in Australia for a year?

If the policy has worldwide territorial scope and the maximum length of stay covers your academic year, then you can. Watch two things: outside the European Union your Dutch basic health insurance pays only to a limited extent, and the outward and return journeys plus any travelling around them must fall within the same insured period. So state the full period, not only the teaching weeks.

Am I insured during my work placement?

That depends on the work. Office and research work is usually within the cover, physical work or work with machinery often not. Moreover the placement provider has a duty of care comparable to that of an employer, so injury at the placement runs in the first place through that party. Have it confirmed in writing in advance what your policy accepts.

Is the furnishing of my room abroad insured?

No. A travel insurance covers luggage you take with you, not the contents of accommodation on the spot. Furniture, kitchen items and equipment you buy there fall outside the cover. For those items you need local home contents insurance or a specific overseas policy. Your parents' home contents insurance in the Netherlands usually does not extend that far.

Do I have to stay registered in the Netherlands?

In virtually every case, yes. These policies assume a student with a Dutch home address who studies temporarily elsewhere. If you deregister with your local authority, your health insurance usually ends as well and the travel cover loses its underlying layer. In that case insurance for a long stay abroad fits better than continuous travel insurance.
