In brief
A self-employed package bundles the sections a sole trader needs: liability (AVB and, where needed, BAV), tools and business contents, legal expenses with debt recovery, and often some form of income protection.
The main consideration is not the discount but whether you include disability cover. For a self-employed person that is usually the largest financial exposure.
This page deals with one part. The overview of all parts is on the main page on business insurance.
What to look out for
AVB and BAV are not the same
If you work with your hands, the AVB is the basis. If you advise or design, it is the BAV. Many self-employed professionals need both.
Debt recovery is the most used section
Unpaid invoices are the most common legal problem for a self-employed person. The debt recovery module often pays for itself.
Tools in the van
That is covered neither by your motor insurance nor by your home contents insurance. Goods-in-transit cover is the answer.
Income if you cannot work
Disability insurance (AOV) is expensive but not a luxury. Look at the definition of incapacity and the waiting period before you compare on premium.
What determines the premium
- Profession and risk class
- Annual turnover
- Sections chosen
- Sums insured
- Excess and waiting periods
This information is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Frequently asked questions
What is in a self-employed package?
Usually liability, tools and business contents, legal expenses with debt recovery, and optionally income protection.
Do I need an AVB or a BAV?
If you work physically and on site, the AVB. If you advise or design, the BAV. In engineering, IT and construction supervision, often both.
Is disability insurance part of the package?
Sometimes, as a separate section. It is the largest item, but also the largest exposure for a self-employed person.
Are my tools in the van covered?
Only with goods-in-transit cover. Your motor insurance covers the vehicle, not the contents.
