In brief

A complete package is not a separate product but a bundle of individual policies with one start date and usually a package discount. The core consists of liability: the public and employers' liability insurance for injury and property damage (Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code) and, if you advise, design or calculate, professional indemnity insurance for pure financial loss.

Around it sits the cover for your resources: tools, machinery, laptop and stock, plus the van or car for which third-party liability cover is required by law (Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM)). If you work at clients' premises, watch the care, custody and control cover for property in your care. That is often missing as standard.

The third layer is continuity: legal expenses cover for contract and debt recovery disputes, business interruption if fire or a breakdown brings you to a standstill, cyber cover in the event of a hack, and a provision for your income during a long illness. Without staff, you are the production capacity yourself; that layer therefore carries a lot of weight.

Independent, personal, sorted quickly

We compare your insurance package across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive before you take out cover.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Profession and activities: this determines the risk class
  • Turnover: the basis for liability
  • Sums insured: tools, stock, limits
  • Number of parts: more cover, package discount
  • Excess: higher risk, lower premium
  • Claims history: earlier claims count

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where a complete package runs into its limits

Two points that make the difference at a claim.

Complete is not the same as everything

Even in the widest package, some things remain excluded. Not covered are intent and wilful recklessness (Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code), fines and additional tax assessments, the redoing or refunding your own work and contractual penalties you have taken on yourself. Tools left overnight in an unattended van are often excluded or limited, and legal expenses cover has a waiting period and does not cover a dispute that already existed when the policy was taken out.

Your described capacity and sums insured must be right

The policy covers only work within the described business activity. If you expand from hands-on work into advice, or start working with staff or subcontractors, report it. On entering into the contract, Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code; an incorrect disclosure can reduce the payout or cause it to lapse (Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code). Also check each year whether the sums insured for tools and stock are still right after any investments.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

What makes this package complete compared with a basic package?

A basic package usually stops at liability and possibly tools. Complete means that legal expenses, business interruption, cyber cover and a provision for your income are included as well. Those are the covers that only start to count when you cannot work for a longer period or have to fight out a dispute with a client.

Is disability insurance compulsory for self-employed professionals?

Not at present. Legislation for compulsory disability insurance for self-employed people is in preparation; check the government website for the current position. Until it exists, you choose for yourself between a regular AOV, a safety-net variant, a bread fund (broodfonds) or your own reserves. Allow for a waiting period and for the exclusion of conditions you already had.

Can I leave parts out?

Yes. A package is a bundle of separate covers. You can switch parts on or off. Weigh up for each part what you can bear yourself. Skipping liability is rarely wise, because injury claims can run on for years. Tools or business interruption cover are easier to do without if your equipment is limited.

Does the cover also apply to work abroad?

Only if the territorial limit allows it. Many policies cover the Netherlands or Europe; work or delivery in the United States and Canada is often excluded. If you work across the border temporarily, report it in advance. Your equipment insurance also has a territorial limit and sometimes extra requirements for storage and transport.
