Travel insurance consists of separate sections that you choose alongside each other. The core is the assistance through an emergency assistance centre: admission to a hospital abroad, medical transport, repatriation, or bringing your car home when nobody can drive it any longer. Alongside that are the medical expenses section and the luggage section, each with its own conditions and its own limits.
The medical expenses section operates supplementary to your health insurance. Within Europe your basic health insurance pays for treatment up to the rate applicable in the Netherlands. In countries with a more expensive healthcare system a large difference is left open. The basic health insurance also does not pay for medical transport to the Netherlands or for repatriation, and those are precisely the items that weigh most heavily in the event of serious injury.
If you are choosing between continuous and single-trip cover, look at the number of trips a year; see also continuous travel insurance and single-trip travel insurance. If you also want the trip cost back when you cannot depart, separate cancellation insurance is needed; that cover is not automatically part of a travel policy.
We compare your travel insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.
Travel insurance
Compare
Get coveredThe structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
The basic cover insures the core of your travel insurance. We set out what Ansvar Idea and other insurers offer within it.
On top of that to medical assistance, also luggage, accidents, legal expenses and (optionally) winter sports.
The most complete cover. We compare Ansvar Idea's extended version with the market.
What is covered
| Situation | Basic | With winter sports module |
|---|---|---|
| Theft of luggage from a locked space | Provided that | Provided that |
| Repatriation after an accident | Yes | Yes |
| Medical expenses abroad | Provided that | Provided that |
| Damage to or theft of hired ski equipment | No | Yes |
| An accident while skiing off-piste | No | Provided that |
| A trip to an area with a negative travel advisory | No | No |
Travel insurance reimburses medical expenses as a supplement to your health insurance, not as a replacement for it. Winter sports and special sports are excluded as standard and require a separate module. A negative travel advisory from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs generally excludes cover for that area; report a claim as soon as reasonably possible (7:941 DCC).

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.
We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.
You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.
We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.
We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
For admission to hospital, medical transport or early return you must make contact in advance. If you arrange an air ambulance or a hospital stay yourself and it turns out afterwards that a cheaper or medically equivalent route was possible, not everything is paid for. Reporting should moreover be done as soon as possible, as Article 7:941 DCC of the Dutch Civil Code requires; keep invoices, statements and the emergency assistance centre's file number.
Each section has maximum amounts and each category has sub-limits: for a laptop, a camera, jewellery and a bicycle. Money and securities are covered only to a limited extent or not at all. Theft from a parked car, from a tent or of unattended luggage at a station is rarely paid for. For more expensive items, separate valuables insurance is a better solution than travel cover.
Skiing, snowboarding, diving, climbing and similar activities do not fall within the standard section. Separate modules exist for those; see winter sports and adventurous trips. Without that module there is no cover for injury, for damaged equipment or for the costs of rescue or removal from the piste, and those are precisely the expensive items.
If you travel to an area for which a negative travel advisory applies because of war or unrest, the cover usually falls away. Treatment connected with a pre-existing condition, or which you had already planned in advance, is also not paid for. If you depart with a medical history, have it checked in advance whether the medical expenses section is of any use in your case.
This is what people ask us most.
Abroad, the basic health insurance pays up to the Dutch rate at most and does not pay for repatriation, medical transport home, or search and rescue. In countries with expensive healthcare a large difference is left open. Travel insurance supplements that and also arranges assistance on the spot through an emergency assistance centre.
Only if you take out that module separately. The travel cover is about what happens during the trip; cancellation is about the trip cost you lose when illness, a death in the family or another named cause prevents you from departing. Take out that cover shortly after booking, not just before departure.
Not as standard. Without a winter sports module there is no cover for accidents on the piste, for damaged or stolen equipment or for recovery costs. The same applies to diving, climbing and other higher-risk sports. We include those modules in the comparison, because insurers fill in the list of named sports differently.
If you travel once or twice a year, a single-trip policy per trip is usually sufficient. If you go away more often, including short weekends and business trips, continuous cover is more practical because you no longer have to notify anything. Do watch the maximum number of consecutive days per trip.
Every situation is different. For these situations we have a separate page.
