Basic cover
- Fire & lightning strike
- Storm
- Possessions away from home
- Water damage
As soon as work is done in the home, the contents split into two categories, and on a personal policy the business half falls outside the cover.

A personal home contents insurance covers household goods. The policy conditions exclude items that have a business purpose: the laptop you use only for your business, the stock in the garage, tools that go into the van, the equipment in your home studio. After a fire or a burglary that distinction comes up immediately, and it often turns out that the most expensive part of what was there was not covered by the policy.
The line is not always sharp. A desk and a chair you also use privately generally remain home contents. A machine, a stock of goods for sale or a server cabinet does not. Some policies include a limited extension for business items in the home up to a small amount. That extension is intended for a home working space, not for a business run from home with stock and customer visits.
Working in the home affects the other policies too. Liability for your work is not covered under the personal policy, and a customer who trips on your doorstep is a business claim. Together we determine where the line falls between home contents and business contents, and whether a wider form of personal cover is still sufficient in your case.
We compare your contents insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

Compare
Get coveredThe structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
The basic cover insures the core of your home contents insurance. We show what De Goudse and other insurers offer within it.
As well as fire and storm, also water damage, belongings outside the home and, with comprehensive cover, your own accidents.
The most complete cover. We compare De Goudse's extended version with the market.
What is covered
| Situation | Extended | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|
| Fire, smoke and water damage in the home | Yes | Yes |
| Theft after forced entry | Yes | Yes |
| Knocks and falls at home | No | Yes |
| Loss or theft away from home | Provided that | Provided that |
| Damage during transport, repair or exhibition | Provided that | Provided that |
| Wear, shrinkage, damp and insect damage | No | No |
A home contents policy has sub-limits: for jewellery, audiovisual equipment and collections a lower limit applies than for the rest of the contents. If your items exceed that, you insure them separately on a valuables policy, usually on the basis of a valuation (7:960 DCC). Underinsurance leads to a proportionately lower payout.

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.
We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.
You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.
We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.
We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
Goods you hold for your trade or business fall outside the personal cover, wherever they are kept. Stock, goods for sale, tools and equipment used solely for business belong on a business contents and goods insurance. Even if the fire starts in the living room and destroys the stock in the garage, that stock remains uninsured if nothing has been arranged for it.
For a desk, monitor and chair you use both privately and for work, many policies include a limited extension up to a modest amount. That is enough for a working space, but not for a consulting room, a studio or a webshop's stock. Above that amount the exclusion applies in full again. So state what you do at home when you take out the policy, rather than having to explain it afterwards.
If you receive people for your work, the use of the home changes and with it the risk. A visitor who falls on your stairs makes a claim against you as a business owner. That is not personal liability but business liability, and under Article 6:174 of the Dutch Civil Code you can be held liable as the owner of the building. Report such visits, because the fire assessment changes as a result too.
Wear, inherent defect and the gradual effect of damp remain outside the cover, as does damage through intent or wilful recklessness under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code. Business interruption, meaning the turnover you lose while you cannot work, is never insured on a home contents policy. There is separate business interruption cover for that. The same applies to restoring files and records.
This is what people ask us most.
Only if the policy has an extension for business items and the value stays within that modest amount. If you use the device solely for your business, the exclusion for items with a business purpose applies and the laptop belongs on business contents cover. The distinction is about the use, not about who paid for the device.
At the purpose of the item. Furniture and equipment that are also used privately remain home contents; stock, goods for sale, tools and machinery for the business are business contents. Record doubtful cases on the policy schedule in advance, because an argument afterwards is always about the most expensive item and by then there is no evidence left of how it was used.
No. Home contents insurance pays for damaged belongings, not for lost turnover and not for continuing costs. If the damage stops you working, that is business interruption and there is a separate insurance for it. The cost of restoring records and digital files also falls outside it and needs its own provision on the commercial policy.
Yes. How the home is used is a fact on which acceptance rests, and any change to it must be reported. If you fail to disclose that a workshop, stock or customer visits have been added, the insurer can assess at claim stage what it would have done had it known the true situation, with a lower payout or none at all as a result.
