Personal liability insurance stops the moment what you do can be treated as work, and that line is lower than most people think.

Every personal liability insurance has the same hard boundary: what is covered is your liability as a private individual, and what is excluded is everything you do in a profession or business. As long as you live at home and go on holiday, that is no problem. As soon as you do jobs for payment, resell goods or do something for third parties alongside your job, that sentence suddenly matters.
The insurer does not test whether you feel like a business owner, but whether the act had a professional or business character. Tiling a bathroom for an acquaintance for payment, supervising a conversion for a friend, buying goods to resell them at a profit: those are the cases in which an AVP does not pay and there is not yet a business policy.
So with De Goudse we first ask what you actually do alongside your private life. If that turns out to contain a business risk, business liability insurance is the addition needed, and not an extension of the personal policy.
We compare your personal liability insurance (AVP) across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.
Personal liability insurance (AVP)
Compare
Get coveredThe structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
The basic cover insures the essentials. We show what De Goudse and other insurers offer here.
On top of that to damage to third parties, employers' and product liability and damage during work at the client's premises.
The most complete cover. We compare De Goudse's extended versions with the market.
What is covered
| Situation | Standard | With extension |
|---|---|---|
| Your child breaks a window at the neighbours' | Yes | Yes |
| Your dog bites a passer-by (6:179 DCC) | Yes | Yes |
| Damage to a rented holiday home | Provided that | Provided that |
| Damage to property in your care (care, custody and control) | No | Provided that |
| Damage caused with a motor vehicle (Article 2 WAM) | No | No |
| Damage caused intentionally (7:952 DCC) | No | No |
Personal liability insurance (AVP) covers damage that you or a member of your household cause to someone else in a private capacity. Damage caused with a motor vehicle is not covered: the WAM applies to that. The care, custody and control exclusion excludes damage to property in your care, unless the policy provides an extension for it.

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.
We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.
You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.
We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.
We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
If you help a neighbour move house and a cupboard goes through the stair rail, that is a favour and it falls under the AVP. If you lay a floor for payment and it cracks months later, the insurer treats the act as a business one. It is not about the size of the payment but about the character of the assignment: agreed work, with a result the other party may count on.
Anyone who makes and sells goods through a platform, or takes on assignments alongside a job, falls outside the personal policy with that part. If you supply a product that causes damage, the product liability under Article 6:185 of the Dutch Civil Code also comes into play, which does not require fault. The AVP does not cover that. Report it in advance. Afterwards the exclusion always looks clearer than it did beforehand.
Loss you cause as an employee lands with your employer under Article 6:170 of the Dutch Civil Code; towards that employer you are protected by Article 7:661 of the Dutch Civil Code, except in cases of intent or wilful recklessness. For voluntary work it is often the case that the organisation has its own cover. We look at which policy comes first, so that you do not pay for double insurance and are not left with a gap.
As well as professional and business activities, the policy excludes loss caused deliberately (Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code) and damage caused with a motor vehicle, which has its own compulsory insurance under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM). Pure financial loss without injury or property damage, such as wrong advice that costs someone else money, also does not belong in this product.
Retroactive cover (prior risk) Included for your staff during work.
This is what people ask us most.
Not for those jobs. The personal policy excludes professional and business activities, and paid work for third parties comes under that, even where little money is involved and you have no trade register entry. Public and employers' liability insurance is needed for that part. We map out which part of your activities belongs where.
The personal policy covers your liability as a private individual: loss in and around the home, on the road as a cyclist and on holiday. The business version covers loss arising in the running of your business, including employers' liability and loss during work at a client's premises. They do not overlap; one begins where the other ends.
Often not. Many local authorities and organisations have a collective arrangement for volunteers, which takes precedence over your own policy. If you do not know whether one exists, ask the organisation before you insure anything extra. We check what is in place and whether your personal policy covers the remainder.
Not your personal liability insurance. As soon as you put products on the market, the product liability under Article 6:185 of the Dutch Civil Code applies: if the product is defective and causes damage, you are liable without any fault having to be established. A business policy with product liability is the right place for that.
Every situation is different. For these situations we have a separate page.
