In brief

Finass is an independent broker and places policies with the insurer that suits your situation; De Goudse is one of them. The personal line consists of the familiar elements: liability, home contents, buildings, car, travel and accidents.

Personal liability insurance is the cheapest policy with the greatest consequences. It is written around Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code, the wrongful act, and around the special cases the law recognises alongside it. For children up to the age of fourteen you as parent are in principle liable yourself. For damage caused by your dog or cat, Article 6:179 of the Dutch Civil Codeapplies, the strict liability of the keeper of an animal. In both cases it does not matter whether you did anything wrong, and that is exactly what makes the cover valuable.

Who falls within the family cover is precisely defined and changes over the years. A son or daughter studying away from home usually remains co-insured as long as they are in education or receiving student finance. A child who starts work and lives independently drops out. A resident parent, an au pair or a house guest also has its own arrangement. Go through this whenever the household changes, because a claim is assessed on the situation at the date of loss and not on the situation when the policy was taken out.

This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on SME insurance package.

Why arrange it through Finass Verzekert?

We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.

Independent

We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.

One fixed adviser

You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.

Switching without hassle

We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.

Help with claims

We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.

What to look out for

Four situations that occur in an average household and yet often fall outside the cover.

Someone else's belongings in your keeping

The care, custody and control exclusion is the most underestimated provision in the liability policy. A borrowed trailer, a friend's camera, a rented holiday home or a neighbour's tools: if you damage them, the loss is in principle excluded because the item was in your care. Some policies restore limited cover for staying as a guest or hiring accommodation; check that before you take anything with you.

Motor vehicles are outside it

Damage caused with or by a motor vehicle does not fall under personal liability insurance. The compulsory insurance of Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM)exists for that. The same applies to a scooter, a moped and a speed pedelec. For an ordinary electric bicycle a different arrangement applies, and that difference is decisive as soon as you collide with someone.

Work and letting are not private

Acts connected with a profession or business are excluded, even where you carry them out at home. Anyone using part of the home for business, letting rooms or offering the home temporarily through a platform needs a separate arrangement for that; otherwise you are left empty-handed on liability and on contents and buildings claims alike.

Maintenance, damp and vermin in the building

Under contents and buildings cover the following remain excluded: damage from slowly operating influences such as damp, mould and subsidence, the consequences of deferred maintenance or construction faults, and damage caused by vermin. Nor is flooding from a primary flood defence insurable. These are not the exceptions of one insurer, but the market standard.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Composition of the household: single, cohabiting or a family with children
  • Postcode and construction type of the home: counts for contents, buildings and motor cover
  • Contents value and rebuild value: established using a value calculator
  • Excess chosen: can be set separately for each policy
  • No-claims years for motor vehicles: registered and transferable within the household
  • Number of policies in the package: determines the level of any package discount

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is my student living away from home still co-insured?

Usually yes, as long as they are unmarried and in full-time education or receiving student finance. The wording varies by policy and sometimes the cover applies only to liability and not to contents in the student room. When a course starts, check exactly what is included and whether separate contents cover is needed.

My child has broken the neighbours' window. What now?

Report it to us or directly to the insurer and do not pay anything yourself. For children under fourteen you are in principle liable by law, whether or not the child can be blamed. If you admit liability yourself or make an undertaking, that can make handling the claim more difficult.

Do I have to report building work?

Yes. An extension, a dormer window or a new kitchen increases the rebuild value and the contents value. If you do not report it, a claim may reveal that the sum insured is too low and payment is made proportionately. During the work itself, restrictions also apply to theft and water damage in premises that are not secured.

What is never covered, whichever insurer it is?

Damage you cause intentionally remains excluded under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code, as does damage from war and civil commotion and from a nuclear reaction. Normal wear and tear is also not damage but use. Exactly what falls under these terms is set out in the policy conditions which you receive before taking out the policy.
