Insurance through The Gouda
The Gouda is one of the insurers Finass works with. Whether your policy is best placed there follows from the cover you need and not from the name on the policy schedule.

In brief
Finass Advies is an independent broker. We compare the offerings of several insurers objectively and place your policy with the insurer whose conditions, acceptance policy and premium best suit your situation. The Gouda is one of them, both for personal cover and for business owners. The order stays the same: first establish which cover is needed, then which insurer provides it most keenly.
On the personal side it usually involves the familiar combination of liability, home contents, buildings, Engine and travel cover. On the business side it involves public and employers' liability insurance, business interruption, contents and staff-related cover. Placing several policies with one insurer may produce a package discount, but that is never a reason in itself: a package is not automatically the best option on each individual element.
What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer concerned; you receive both before you sign. Conditions differ by insurer and by version, even where the type of cover sounds the same. We compare on the points that make the difference in your situation, such as the care, custody and control provision, the depreciation method, the excess and the clauses that end up on the policy schedule.
This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare personal liability insurance (AVP).
What to look for when choosing an insurer
Four points that matter more than the brand name on the policy schedule.
Acceptance policy differs by insurer
Each insurer applies its own rules on claims history, the construction type of the home, occupation, sector and age. If your situation does not fit one provider's policy, a broker puts it to another. A refusal or a clause with an increased excess at one insurer says little about the possibilities at the next.
A package ties policies together
With a package policy the elements run on one contract with one renewal date. That gives a clear overview and a discount, but it makes detaching one element harder and the discount may lapse if you end a policy. Weigh that up, particularly if one element can clearly be placed better or more cheaply elsewhere.
What you must disclose when you apply
The duty of disclosure applies to the application under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code. If you fail to disclose a claims history, an earlier cancellation by an insurer, or a criminal record you are asked about, the insurer may, under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code reduce the payout or refuse it altogether.
What no insurer covers
Whichever insurer it is, intent and recklessness (Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code) stay outside the cover, as do war risks and nuclear reactions and damage caused by wear, deferred maintenance or a design fault. Earthquake and flooding from a primary flood defence are also excluded under virtually every policy. Anyone promising big differences on these points has not read the conditions properly.
What does your premium depend on?
- Type of cover chosen — wider cover means a higher premium
- Sum insured — the maximum payout per event or per year
- Excess — a higher excess lowers the premium
- Risk address and construction type — postcode, type of home and materials used all count
- Claims history — earlier claims count towards acceptance and premium
- Size of the package — several policies with one insurer can earn a discount
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.
What is covered
| Situation | Liability | Home contents |
|---|---|---|
| Your dog bites a passer-by on the hand | Yes | No |
| A leaking washing machine warps your own parquet floor | No | Yes |
| That same water seeps through and damages the ceiling of the neighbour below | Provided that | No |
| You damage a friend's laminate floor while doing DIY there | No | No |
| During a burglary your laptop and jewellery are taken | No | Yes |
| Your bicycle is stolen at the station while it was locked | No | Provided that |
Even within one package each section keeps its own conditions; the discount says nothing about how this table is divided.
Frequently asked questions
The questions we are asked most often about this.
Do I take out the insurance with The Gouda or with Finass?
The insurance contract is concluded between you and the insurer; the policy schedule and the conditions come from that company. Finass acts as an intermediary and remains your point of Contact afterwards for changes, renewal and claims. Our role, our remuneration and the complaints procedure are described in the service guide.
Why does this insurer come out on top for one application and not for another?
Because the comparison works out differently for each product and each situation. An insurer may be keen on a home and not on a van, or may or may not Accept a particular sector. We explain why a particular provider comes out on top, so that you can follow the reasoning and the choice does not rest on the brand name.
Can I have existing policies transferred to Finass?
Usually yes. With a continuing authority we become the point of Contact at your current insurer, without the policy having to be taken out again. The cover, start date and no-claims years built up remain unchanged. After that we go through the file for double cover, outdated sums insured and clauses that are no longer correct.
What happens when I claim?
You report the claim, we put the notification to the insurer and support the file. The assessment and the payout come from the insurer and rest on the policy conditions. Report in good time: Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires you to report as soon as you are reasonably aware of the event, even if it is not yet clear whether you will make a claim.
