De Goudse car insurance

De Goudse works through brokers and is strongly focused on business owners. For a private car policy that mainly means: watch the line between what you drive privately and what you drive for the business.

  • Several insurers compared objectively
  • 9.5 customer rating for a new policy
  • AFM licence 12016589

In brief

As brokers we set the range of more than thirty insurers side by side. De Goudse stands out because its range for private customers and for business owners lie close together. If you drive privately in a car you also use for your business, that is a reason to deal with both sides in one conversation.

In insurance terms that line is sharper than it feels in practice. A private car policy assumes private use with commuting where applicable. If you drive to clients every day, carry materials or let an employee drive, that is business use and the car belongs under a business car insurance. If that is not declared, the basis of the premium is wrong and Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code gives the insurer room to reduce the payment.

If you have an enthusiast car alongside the everyday one, look at classic car insurance or at the wider classic vehicle cover. Those policies work with a mileage limit, a storage requirement and a valued amount. That is not only cheaper, it also prevents a loss adjuster having to derive the value of your car after a claim from a market that barely exists.

This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare car insurance.

We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.

What to look out for

Four points on which this policy is assessed.

Package or separate policy

If you combine buildings, home contents, legal expenses and car, that gives a discount and one point of contact. Do check whether sections overlap: motor legal expenses cover and a personal accident cover can appear on more than one policy. Paying twice produces no double payment.

Replacement transport and assistance on the road

Breakdown assistance and a replacement car are additional sections and are not automatically included in own-damage cover. Check whether assistance applies to a breakdown at home, or only after an accident, and whether cover abroad is included. Without these sections you have no right to transport in the event of a breakdown, even if you have comprehensive cover.

Accessories and modifications

Audio, navigation, a towbar or a roof box fitted later belong on the policy schedule as a declared accessory. For additions that have not been declared, insurers often apply a limited maximum or no cover. Keep the invoices, because after a claim you are asked for the purchase value and not for what you think it was worth.

What is not included

Outside the cover are luggage and personal belongings in the car, damage to the interior from goods, animals or loads carried, and use for driving lessons or carriage for payment. Hire to third parties is also excluded, as is damage caused intentionally or through reckless driving, as Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code provides.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Purpose of use: private, commuting or business journeys as well
  • List price and power output: decisive for the own-damage premium
  • No-claims years: translated into a step on the discount scale
  • Age of the regular driver: experience counts heavily in the rate
  • Number of products in the package: combining lowers the total
  • Mileage band: a second car with few kilometres is considerably cheaper

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

May I make business journeys on a private policy?

Occasionally, usually yes; regularly, no. As soon as you are on the road for work regularly, carry materials or let an employee drive, the risk changes and that should be on the policy. Discuss it in advance; adjusting the description of use takes little effort, whereas an argument after an accident about why you were driving somewhere produces a great deal of trouble.

What is the advantage of a valuation on a classic?

A valuation report fixes the value before anything happens, so that the insurer takes that amount as the starting point in a total loss. Without a report the market value is estimated afterwards, and on older cars estimates vary widely. Watch the period of validity of the report. If it expires, you fall back on market value after all.

Who may drive my car?

As a rule anyone with a valid licence who has your permission, unless the policy has a restricted range of drivers or an age clause. If the car is driven regularly by someone else, that person should be declared as the regular driver. With a young driver a higher excess often applies, even if they only drive occasionally.

What if something is stolen from my car?

The break-in damage to the car falls under own-damage cover, but the stolen items do not. Laptops, phones, tools and luggage belong on a home contents, travel or business policy, with their own conditions on where and when theft is covered. Do not leave valuables in the car; belongings left in sight lead to argument on other policies too.
