OOM Verzekeringen · compared independently · advice from Finass
Travel cover is mainly a top-up: your health insurance, contents policy and liability insurance already cover part of it, and the question is which part is left over.

For a holiday you rarely take out cover you do not already have. Your Dutch basic health insurance reimburses emergency care abroad, but at most up to the tariff that applies in the Netherlands for that treatment. The difference with a Swiss or American bill is left with you, and repatriation, medical transport and search and rescue operations are not included at all. That is the first gap travel cover fills.
The second is the choice between single-trip and continuous cover. A single-trip policy runs from departure to return and is intended for one journey. A continuous policy covers all trips in a year, but applies a maximum number of consecutive days per trip. Anyone going away twice a year is cheaper off with single-trip cover; anyone who also takes weekend breaks and business trips is not.
We therefore look first at your travel pattern and at what your contents and health policies already cover, and only then at the premium. For a long stay in another country, travel cover is the wrong product. You then end up with an insurance for expats or with an emigration package.
The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
The basic cover insures the core of your travel insurance. We show what OOM and other insurers offer within it.
On top of that to medical assistance, also luggage, accidents, legal expenses and (optionally) winter sports.
The most complete cover. We compare OOM's extended version with the market.

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
Basic health insurance reimburses emergency care worldwide, but limited to the tariff applicable in the Netherlands for that same treatment. In countries with an expensive health system that covers only part of it. Basic health insurance also does not pay for an air ambulance, for a nurse escort or for family members to travel out. Those are precisely the items that mount up fastest, and precisely what the medical module of travel cover exists for.
A continuous travel policy states a maximum number of consecutive days a trip may last. If you stay away longer, cover lapses for the whole trip, not just for the days beyond. Anyone planning a sabbatical or a long tour must report it in advance. Note also: a stay for work or study does not count as a trip, however short it is.
Baggage is reimbursed at market value, not at replacement value as new, and a sub-limit applies per category. Items left unattended, items taken from a parked car, cash, jewellery and damage through wear or inherent defect are excluded. Without a report to the local police or a property irregularity report from the airline, a claim almost never gets through the assessment.
Winter sports, diving, hill walking off marked paths and motorised sports fall under a separate module or are excluded altogether. The same applies to paid work during the trip and to damage to a hired scooter, quad bike or jet ski; there is an excess waiver policy at the hire company for that. Ask about this before you book, not after you are handed a key on the spot.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
This is what people ask us most.
Usually yes. Basic health insurance reimburses emergency care up to the Dutch tariff at most and pays for no repatriation, no medical transport and no search operations. In countries with high medical costs a substantial part of the bill therefore remains outstanding. The medical module of travel cover tops up precisely that difference and also arranges assistance on the spot.
That depends on how often you go away. With one or two trips a year, single-trip cover is usually better value, because you only pay for the days you are travelling. If you travel more often, including weekend breaks and business trips, continuous cover wins. Do watch the maximum trip duration stated in the conditions.
No. Skiing and snowboarding are in a separate module with virtually every insurer, and even then it often applies only on prepared pistes. Off-piste without a guide, speed competitions and freestyle in a snowpark are generally excluded. Take out the module before you leave. You cannot add cover for a trip that has already started.
Report it at the airport straight away and have a property irregularity report drawn up. Without that document there is no evidence. The airline is the party liable in the first instance and travel cover is supplementary. Keep receipts for necessary replacement purchases and report the loss to the insurer as soon as you can, as Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires.
Request a quote without obligation. We will look at which insurer best matches your activities and your risk.
