In brief

On an adventurous trip the emphasis shifts from luggage to assistance and medical costs. If you are injured during a multi-day trek, the issue is not compensation for a stolen suitcase but medical evacuation, admission to a distant hospital and repatriation. Those costs mount up quickly and your health insurance pays only up to the Dutch rate. A medical costs module and an emergency assistance centre you can actually reach are the core here.

The second point is the sports cover. A standard travel policy covers ordinary holiday activities. Trekking at altitude, climbing, canyoning, scuba diving, rafting, mountain biking over rough terrain and riding a motorcycle off surfaced roads fall under special sports. Without that module you are not covered for injury or equipment. Even with the module a hard core remains excluded, including air sports, mountain sports away from marked routes and speed events.

Third, pay attention to the length of the trip and the area of cover. A continuous policy has a maximum number of consecutive days per trip; anyone travelling for three months often falls outside it and needs a long-stay or single-trip policy with worldwide cover. Travel to areas with negative travel advice is generally excluded. See also winter sports cover for the mountain season.

What matters on an adventurous trip

Three elements that weigh more heavily on such a trip than on an ordinary holiday.

Core

Assistance and evacuation

An emergency assistance centre, medical transport and repatriation from remote places.

  • An emergency assistance centre reachable 24 hours a day
  • Medical transport to a suitable hospital
  • Repatriation with an escort
  • Search and rescue costs often limited
Module

Special sports

Additional cover for activities with an increased risk.

  • Trekking, climbing, diving, rafting
  • Described sport by sport in the conditions
  • Often requirements as to a licence or supervision
  • Air sports usually excluded
Form

Length of trip and area

Long trips rarely fit within an ordinary continuous policy.

  • Maximum number of consecutive days
  • Worldwide cover instead of Europe
  • Negative travel advice excluded
  • Arrange an extension in advance

What is covered

What is actually covered, including limits, excess and the description of each sport, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) you receive before taking out the policy.

Where things go wrong on an adventurous trip

Four points that determine whether you are genuinely helped when something happens.

Sports exclusions are described in concrete terms

Insurers exclude activities by name: air sports such as parachuting, paragliding and gliding, mountain sports away from marked routes and involving the use of ropes or crampons, and taking part in speed contests. Other sports can be insured, but subject to conditions: a valid licence for diving, professional supervision for climbing, a maximum altitude for trekking. If you do not meet those, the cover lapses even with the sports module.

Search and rescue costs are not an open item

The costs of searching and rescue are by no means always paid in full. Many policies apply a separate maximum for this, or cover only a rescue that the emergency assistance centre itself arranged. In countries where rescue services operate commercially, a helicopter flight can produce a considerable bill. So always call the emergency assistance centre first and report the incident as soon as reasonably possible, as Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires.

What else falls outside this

The ordinary exclusions apply on an adventurous trip as well: intent and recklessness under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code, damage while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, luggage left unattended and the consequences of an existing medical condition that you did not declare when taking out the policy. Damage you cause to someone else with a hired motorcycle or quad bike falls under the compulsory insurance for that vehicle and not under the travel policy.

Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code

Arrange it before departure, not on the way

Taking out or extending travel insurance while you are already on your way is not possible with most insurers. The same applies to extending the length of the trip: you apply for that before the maximum number of consecutive days has passed. Give your route, sports and planned activities in full when you take out the policy. That comes under the duty of disclosure of Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code and prevents argument afterwards.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Area of cover. Europe or worldwide
  • Length of the trip: weeks or months at a stretch
  • Sports module: which activities are included
  • Medical module: costs and evacuation
  • Destination: healthcare costs and accessibility
  • Excess: per event or per module

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Does trekking or hill walking come under ordinary cover?

Walking on marked paths usually does. As soon as you leave marked routes, go above an altitude named in the conditions or use ropes, crampons or guides, the policy speaks of mountain sports. That is a separate category which is only covered with the special sports module, and sometimes only under professional supervision.

Am I insured if I go diving?

With the special sports module often yes, but subject to conditions. Insurers generally require a valid diving licence, diving within the limits of that licence and diving with a buddy or under supervision. Depth limits also occur. If you dive deeper or without a licence, an accident is not covered, even if you have taken out the module.

How long may my trip last?

Continuous policies have a maximum number of consecutive days per trip. If you stay away longer, the part of the trip after that is not covered. For longer trips there are single-trip policies with a long duration or special long-stay cover. Arrange an extension before the maximum expires. Afterwards it is no longer possible.

What happens if the travel advice changes during my trip?

Travel to areas with negative travel advice is generally excluded. If the advice changes while you are already there, many policies cover the costs of returning early or of assistance with evacuation. If you stay in the area voluntarily, the cover usually lapses. Follow the instructions of the emergency assistance centre and record each contact.

Does the policy cover damage I cause to others?

No. For that you need liability insurance; check whether its area of cover is worldwide and whether the policy also applies during a long stay abroad. Damage with a hired scooter, quad bike or car falls under the compulsory insurance for that vehicle, and not under your travel or liability insurance.
