In brief

Anyone insuring an Alfa Romeo can go in three directions. There are the recent models such as the Giulia, Stelvio and Tonale: ordinary everyday cars with driver assistance systems, for which comprehensive cover makes sense while the value is high. There are the older compact models such as the MiTo and Giulietta, now running as cheap used cars, for which third-party, fire and theft is often enough. And there are the classics: a Spider or a GTV, covering few kilometres and kept in dry storage.

That third group does not belong on an ordinary car policy. For a car used by an enthusiast with a limited mileage there is a separate classic car insurance, usually based on a valuation report, so that you are not left with the market value after a collision. Without a valuation, a mainstream insurer works with what the car would fetch on the market, and that does not do justice to a well-maintained classic.

What the models have in common is that repairs are more involved than on a mass-market make. Parts more often come from abroad and not every general repairer works to the marque's procedures. You will not notice that in the cover, but you will in how long it takes — and therefore in whether you have arranged a replacement vehicle.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Set the cover per car, not per make

The choice between third party, third party fire and theft and comprehensive depends on the value of your particular car, not on the badge on the grille. Set your annual premium plus the excess against the car's current value. If little margin is left, own-damage cover is hard to justify. With a financed or leased car it is different: the lender usually requires comprehensive cover while there is still money owing.

The more powerful engines change the underwriting

Versions with much higher power fall into a different rating group and are judged more strictly on the driver's age and no-claims years. Some insurers set a minimum age or will not accept such a car where there is a young main driver. Declare the exact specification when you apply. If a more powerful version is concealed, the duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code comes into play at the very first claim.

Time off the road after a claim is often longer here

When a body panel or a particular electronic part has to be ordered, the car stands at the repairer for longer. A replacement vehicle is not a standard part of own-damage cover: it is sometimes included in a breakdown assistance or claims service module, sometimes only where the repair is done through the insurer's network. Ask how many days you are entitled to and whether that still applies if you choose a marque specialist rather than an approved repairer.

Exclusions that come up most often with this make

Not covered are: taking part in speed events, timed runs and track sessions, including a club day on private land; driving under the influence or refusing a breath test; hire or use through a car-sharing platform; and damage from wear, a mechanical defect or deferred maintenance. Undeclared modifications to engine management, exhaust or suspension also lead to argument about the cover at the next claim.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Trim level and engine power — The same body with a more powerful engine falls into a higher rating group.
  • Age of the car — Determines whether comprehensive cover is still defensible or third-party, fire and theft becomes the logical choice.
  • No-claims years and age of the driver — On highly powered versions this counts for more than on an entry-level model.
  • Annual mileage — A classic used only in the summer season is rated differently from an everyday car.
  • Storage — Locked garage, driveway or street; on an enthusiast's car often a condition of acceptance.
  • Cover and excess chosen — Third party, third party fire and theft or comprehensive, with or without an additional module for a replacement vehicle.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Which cover suits an older Alfa Romeo?

On a car whose value has fallen considerably, third-party, fire and theft is usually the wisest choice: fire, storm, theft and glass damage stay insured, while you bear damage you cause yourself. If the car covers few kilometres and is in good condition, a classic or enthusiast's scheme with a valuation report is worth considering, because it does not work from the market value.

Am I insured on a track day?

No. Driving on a circuit falls outside the cover of every mainstream car policy, even a club day without timing. As soon as speed, lap times or a closed track are involved, the exclusion applies and you bear both the damage to your own car and that to others. For that use there is separate, temporary cover from specialist providers.

Do I automatically get a replacement vehicle?

Not automatically. A replacement vehicle is a separate module or a benefit tied to repair within the insurer's network. On a make whose parts more often have to be ordered, it is worth arranging this in advance and asking how many days you are entitled to. If you choose a marque specialist yourself, the entitlement sometimes lapses altogether.

Does a small claim cost me no-claims years?

On a claim for which you are liable, yes; on glass damage, theft or storm, usually not. For a small at-fault claim, work out what dropping down the bonus-malus scale will cost you over the coming years and set that against the repair bill. Paying yourself is often cheaper. We can work out that difference for your own step before you report the claim definitively.
