Car insurance for a Spyker

A Spyker is built by hand in a very small run. The insurance therefore turns less on power than on the question of who can still repair this car after damage.

In brief

The Spyker is a Dutch, hand-built sports car from a very small run. That makes insuring it a different conversation from a factory-built supercar: the difficult part is not the power, but the question of what can still be repaired after a collision and by whom. Insurers assess such a car individually and virtually always ask for a valuation report before they offer own-damage cover.

We therefore put the application to insurers that accept special cars on an agreed value, usually with an arrangement about the annual mileage and a fixed place of storage. What is decisive are the provisions you do not see on the premium line: may you name a repairer yourself, how long does the valuation stay valid, and how long does a payment continue if a body part is months in transit.

Weigh up the type of cover deliberately as well. Precisely because a Spyker covers few kilometres, most damage arises while manoeuvring, storing and transporting it and not in traffic. That argues for comprehensive cover. If the car goes virtually only to club events and is by now old enough, a classic car insurance with a limited mileage comes into view.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Valuation figure instead of list price. Because there is no price guide, the insurer calculates with the amount from the valuation report. That amount drives the own-damage premium.
  • Power, weight and rating group. The eight-cylinder engine places the car in a high rating group. Every insurer applies its own classification for that, which makes the differences large.
  • Agreed annual mileage. A low mileage band brings the premium down. If you consistently exceed it, the insurer can reduce the payment proportionately.
  • Storage location and security. A locked garage, alarm class and tracking system all count. If more special cars stand in the same space, the insurer weighs that as one risk.
  • Circle of drivers and driving experience. Limiting cover to one or two named drivers lowers the premium. Insurers often set a minimum age and demonstrable no-claims years alongside it.
  • Repair arrangement and excess. A free choice of specialist repairer costs premium. A steered network or a higher excess lowers it.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The value appears in no price guide

For a Spyker there is no usable price guide: too few were built and virtually every example is specified differently. Insurers therefore accept the car almost exclusively on the basis of a valuation report by a recognised expert. That established value binds both parties under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code, but applies for a limited period. If the valuation expires, the insurer calculates on market value again when there is a claim and the argument about value starts after all.

Not every body repairer can repair hand-formed aluminium

The bodywork consists of hand-formed aluminium panels. Aluminium repair calls for a separate workshop and certified welding, because particles of steel attack the material. A general body repair chain usually cannot do this. Record before you take out the policy that you may name a repairer of your own, otherwise the insurer will send you to its own network. Loss of value remaining after a technically correct repair is not paid by an own-damage policy: you get repair costs, not compensation for the damage history.

The supply of parts determines repair or total loss

On some of the models the engine comes from a large manufacturer's range and is therefore still reasonably obtainable. The handwork around it is not: body parts, the aluminium interior fittings and the trim work are each made to measure. If a part is unobtainable, the repair time mounts up and the insurer may decide on a total loss while the car is technically salvageable. Payments for a replacement vehicle and storage are limited in time.

Standing idle, storage and runs against the clock

A Spyker covers few kilometres and stands indoors for most of the year. Insurers attach a storage clause to that: if the place of storage, the alarm or the circle of drivers changes, you have to report it under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code. If the car stands idle for a season, you can suspend the registration. Touring runs and concours visits are usually covered, but as soon as time or speed is measured, or you go onto a circuit, the cover lapses.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Why does the insurer ask for a valuation report?

Because for a Spyker there is no reliable price guide and virtually every example is built up differently. A valuation by a recognised expert fixes the value in advance and binds both parties under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code. Without a valid valuation the insurer calculates on market value when there is a claim, and on a hand-built car that virtually always turns out lower than owners expect.

What happens if a part is unobtainable?

The repair time then mounts up into months. The insurer may declare the car a total loss as soon as the estimated repair costs approach the valuation figure, even where the panel work in itself is salvageable. Payments for a replacement vehicle and storage do not run on indefinitely. So report damage at once, as Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code prescribes, and have the estimate drawn up by a repairer with experience of this make.

Do I have to stay insured if the car stands indoors all winter?

As long as the registration is in your name and is not suspended, the duty to insure under Article 2 of the WAM applies, even if the car does not move a metre. Suspending it with the RDW removes that duty; cover for fire and theft during storage can often be kept running. If you go on the road during the suspension, you are uninsured.

Is a defect in the engine or drivetrain covered?

No. Own-damage cover pays for damage from a sudden event coming from outside, not for wear, an inherent defect or mechanical and electronic failure. Faults in construction and materials also fall outside the cover. For those you depend on the warranty or on the seller. If a fire arises from such a defect, the fire damage to the car is usually insured.
