In brief

Premium home contents insurance (inboedelverzekering) is not a more expensive version of the same policy, but a different way of settling claims. Where the standard home contents insurance through Turien & Co works with fixed maximums per category and a fixed excess, the premium form works with wider sub-limits, a broader range of insured perils and more room when the loss is assessed. That matters as soon as a home clearly differs from the average: high-quality finishes, an art collection, a lot of audiovisual equipment or a large outdoor space.

The question this product answers is not what are my contents worth but how will my claim be settled. With partial damage to a fitted wall unit, a parquet floor or a designer sofa, the question is whether only the damaged part is paid for or the whole item is replaced, and whether a specialist carries out the repair. This is the point where premium conditions and standard conditions differ most.

We test whether the extra cost makes sense in your situation. If your contents are average and there are no unusual items, the standard policy is usually the better choice. If much of the value sits in a few objects, a valuables policy alongside ordinary contents cover is often more keenly priced than premium cover on everything.

A home contents policy has sub-limits: for jewellery, audiovisual equipment and collections a lower limit applies than for the rest of the contents. If your items exceed that, you insure them separately on a valuables policy, usually on the basis of a valuation (7:960 DCC). Underinsurance leads to a proportionately lower payout.

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Sum insured for contents. In the premium form too, the replacement value as new you declare remains the basis for the rate.
  • Sub-limits chosen. The higher the maximums for valuables, the garden and belongings away from home, the more heavily this weighs.
  • Type of home and standard of finish. Bespoke interiors and high-quality floors raise the average cost of a claim per event.
  • Security. With wider limits for valuables, insurers set stricter requirements for locks, alarms and a safe.
  • Postcode area. Burglary and water damage figures per area also feed into the rate here.
  • Excess and claims history. A lower excess suits this form of cover but raises the premium noticeably.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Wider sub-limits instead of a separate policy

The practical difference lies in the maximums per category: jewellery, audiovisual equipment, art, contents in the garden and belongings away from home. The premium form raises those maximums, so you do not have to arrange separate cover for every category. We set the sub-limits of the standard and the premium variant side by side and work out at which distribution of value the tipping point lies.

Repair and replacement of matching sets

If you damage one door of a fitted cupboard or one board of a laid floor, the key question is whether the rest is renewed as well because the colour or type of wood is no longer available. Premium conditions more often include a pairs and sets clause. Without one, you are left with a visible difference that the insurer will not pay for.

Garden, outdoor space and outbuildings

Outdoor kitchens, verandas, garden furniture, lighting and planting fall under a low maximum on a standard policy, and storm and frost damage to planting is often excluded. The premium form stretches this, but almost never without limit. So tell us what is outside, including the charging point, hot tub and sun blinds; these are the items that generate the most argument afterwards.

What is not covered

Premium cover also excludes: wear and tear, inherent defect, mould and vermin; damage from groundwater or slowly penetrating damp; business stock and equipment; and damage during building work or a period of vacancy that has not been notified. Items that can only be insured on the basis of a valuation report also remain outside the cover for as long as that report is missing. Premium means wider, not all-embracing.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

When is premium worth it over the standard policy?

When the value is spread unevenly across many categories at once: art, jewellery, equipment, garden and bespoke interior. If the extra value sits in one or two objects, an ordinary contents policy with separate valuables cover is usually cheaper. We cost both variants on your own figures before you choose.

Does the guarantee against underinsurance lapse with premium cover?

No, it works the same way: if you declare the sum insured using a value calculator or a valuation, no proportionate reduction is applied to a partial loss. The wider sub-limits of the premium form are separate from this. Setting both mechanisms side by side stops you assuming you are covered when a category still runs up against its maximum.

Do I have to declare valuables separately?

Above a certain amount per item, insurers ask for a specification or a valuation report, in premium cover as well. For valued items, Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code applies to the assessment of the value. Without a declaration the item falls back on the ordinary sub-limit, however high the total sum insured may be.

Can I switch from standard to premium later?

Yes, usually at the contract renewal date and after a fresh inventory. Insurers reassess security and claims history at that point, and may set additional requirements such as a certified safe. We arrange the switch including cancellation with your current insurer, so that no uninsured period arises.
