In brief

The Bewust home contents insurance covers the movable property in and around your home: furniture, clothing, white goods, tools, garden furniture and tenant's improvements such as a kitchen you installed yourself. Everything permanently fixed to the building belongs to the buildings insurance, which at Ansvar Idea is the Bewust home insurance. With almost every claim, that boundary decides which policy pays.

You establish the sum insured using a contents value calculator. If you complete it fully and correctly, a guarantee against underinsuranceusually applies. If the details are not correct, for instance after building work or an inherited collection, the insurer pays proportionately. A home contents policy is an indemnity insurance: Article 7:960 DCC provides that you may not end up better off than you were before.

Also note the sub-limits. Jewellery, watches, cameras, audio and computer equipment, contents in a shed or summerhouse and belongings away from home each have their own maximum. If the actual value is above that, you insure those items separately under a valuables insurance or the valuables and mobile electronics insurance.

Independent, personal, sorted quickly

We compare your contents insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

Basic cover

The basic cover insures the core of your Bewust home contents insurance. We show what Ansvar Idea and other insurers offer within it.

  • Fire & lightning strike
  • Storm
  • Possessions away from home
  • Water damage

Extended cover

As well as fire and storm, also water damage, belongings outside the home and, with comprehensive cover, your own accidents.

  • Burglary, theft & vandalism
  • Jewellery & valuables (limited)
  • Machinery & equipment

Comprehensive cover

The most complete cover. We compare Ansvar Idea's extended version with the market.

  • Garden & garden furniture
  • Jewellery & valuables (limited)
  • Glass breakage
  • Higher cover for valuables

A home contents policy has sub-limits: for jewellery, audiovisual equipment and collections a lower limit applies than for the rest of the contents. If your items exceed that, you insure them separately on a valuables policy, usually on the basis of a valuation (7:960 DCC). Underinsurance leads to a proportionately lower payout.

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Sum insured for contents. The outcome of the value calculator is the basis on which the premium is calculated.
  • Postcode and surroundings. The burglary figures for the neighbourhood and the likelihood of storm and rain damage differ from area to area.
  • Type of home and construction type. A detached house, a flat and a property with a thatched roof each carry a different fire and burglary risk.
  • Security of the home. Approved locks and fittings, smoke alarms and an alarm system all count.
  • Type of cover chosen. Extended perils cover or comprehensive cover, with comprehensive cover also including your own mishaps in the home.
  • Excess and claims history. Earlier burglary or water claims and the excess you choose also determine the rate.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Water from the pipes, not from the ground

Leakage from a supply or waste pipe, a washing machine or a central heating system is covered. Water rising up through the floor or the cellar wall is not: groundwater is excluded, as is flooding caused by a dyke or embankment giving way. Repairing the pipe itself is usually also outside the cover. What is paid is the consequential damage to your belongings, not the fault that caused it.

Theft without signs of forced entry

For theft from the home, the policy conditions require signs of forced entry from the outside. If something disappears during a birthday party, from a shared entrance hall or from a storeroom that was not locked, there is no burglary within the meaning of the policy. Items you have lent out or handed over are also outside the cover; that remains a matter between you and that person.

Gradual causes remain at your expense

Mould, rising damp, woodworm, moths and other vermin, discolouration from sunlight and ordinary wear are excluded. What is insured is a sudden, unforeseen event. The same applies to damage arising from a design fault or neglected maintenance of the property: the conversation then shifts to the buildings policy or to the builder, and not to your contents cover.

Reporting changes keeps your cover intact

If you move in with a partner, let a room, work from home with expensive equipment or leave the property empty for a while, the risk changes. Article 7:928 DCC requires you to give those details correctly at the outset, and the policy calls for changes to be notified. If that does not happen, the insurer may reduce the payout under Article 7:930 DCC.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

What counts as contents and what as buildings?

Rule of thumb: if you could turn the house upside down and it would fall out, it is contents. A sofa, a free-standing cupboard and curtains are contents. A fitted kitchen, the bathroom, the flooring, the boiler and sun blinds on the facade are buildings. If you rent the property, a kitchen you installed yourself does fall under the contents policy as a tenant's improvement.

What happens if my sum insured is too low?

You are then underinsured and the insurer pays proportionately: if the policy shows half the actual value, you receive roughly half even on a small claim. With a correctly completed value calculator a guarantee against underinsurance usually applies, as long as your situation has not changed materially since.

Is my jewellery covered as well?

Up to a sub-limit set out in the policy conditions, and only while they are at home. Away from home, or above that maximum, there is no cover. You then insure jewellery, watches and collections separately on a valuables policy, where they are listed item by item with a description and a valued amount.

Are contents in a storage unit or a student room covered?

Usually not automatically. Belongings you store elsewhere fall outside the ordinary home cover, or are covered only up to a small amount. For that there is home contents insurance for storage. For a child living away from home there is often limited inclusion, for which student home contents insurance offers a wider solution.
