In brief

On a home contents policy, jewellery, watches, art, antiques, collections, photographic equipment and the occasional musical instrument fall under a sub-limit that is quickly too low. The premium valuables insurance through Turien & Co takes those items out of it and insures them separately, described item by item, with cover inside and outside the home. It is therefore a policy at item level, not a policy at household level.

The pivotal point is the determination of value. Items above a certain value call for a valuation report from a recognised valuer, usually with a period of validity of a few years. If that report is valid, the valued amount applies between the parties under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code and you do not have to argue after a theft about what the piece was worth. If the report has expired, you fall back on market value.

Valuables therefore differ fundamentally from hobby and sports equipment, where it is about damage from use, and from premium home contents insurance, which approaches the whole interior as a single unit.

A home contents policy has sub-limits: for jewellery, audiovisual equipment and collections a lower limit applies than for the rest of the contents. If your items exceed that, you insure them separately on a valuables policy, usually on the basis of a valuation (7:960 DCC). Underinsurance leads to a proportionately lower payout.

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Valued amount per item. The sum of the specified items forms the basis of calculation, not a total contents value.
  • Type of item. Wearable jewellery and watches have a different theft profile from art or antiques hanging on the wall.
  • Area of cover. In the home only, in the Netherlands or worldwide. The last is the heaviest variant.
  • Security and safekeeping. A certified safe, a connected alarm or climate control feeds through into the premium and the clauses.
  • Unexplained disappearance included or not. Cover for items disappearing with no identifiable cause is the most expensive extension on this product.
  • Excess per item. Some providers work with an excess per item instead of per event.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

A valuation with a valid date, not a purchase receipt

A purchase invoice says what you once paid, a valuation report says what the piece is worth now. With gold, gemstones and art those figures diverge. Insurers apply a period of validity to reports; once it passes, the binding effect of the valued amount falls away. Put the revaluation date in your diary and tell us when a piece has been revalued or an addition bought.

Wearing and safe clauses determine whether you are paid

With jewellery and watches there is often a condition that the item is being worn or is in a certified safe. If the jewellery is in a bedside table at the moment of the burglary, the payment can be limited to a lower amount. With art, requirements apply to hanging systems and climate. We go through these clauses provider by provider, because they differ considerably.

Away from the home and while travelling

The added value of a separate policy lies in worldwide cover: loss or theft during a trip, in a hotel or on the way. Requirements about baggage usually apply, such as not in checked suitcases and not left unattended. If you travel with a collection or with equipment for work, report that separately; professional use falls outside the personal cover.

What is not covered

The following are generally outside the cover: wear and tear, inherent defect, restoration errors and a fall in the market; damage during treatment, cleaning or repair by a third party; unexplained disappearance where that extension is not included; and items not on the specification. Damage during carriage as checked baggage and use in a profession or trade are also excluded as standard.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Why should I take this out alongside my home contents insurance?

Because the home contents policy has a maximum for valuables that is separate from your total sum insured. Above that maximum you are uninsured, even if the contents are amply insured. The home contents policy also barely covers you away from the home. Separate valuables cover solves both points at once.

How often do I need a new valuation?

Insurers usually apply a fixed period of validity to valuation reports. Once it expires, the valued amount loses its binding effect and settlement falls back on the market value at the time of the loss. With gold and gemstones that can work out favourably or unfavourably. We keep track of the expiry dates and warn you in good time.

Can jewellery inherited or received as a gift, without a receipt, be insured?

Yes, provided it is valued. With heirlooms a report is indispensable, because there is no proof of purchase and the insurer otherwise has no basis. Have the piece photographed and described, including inscriptions and serial numbers. That also helps with tracing it and with reporting a theft to the police.

What if a piece of jewellery goes missing and I do not know how?

That is called unexplained disappearance and is not covered as standard; most policies require an identifiable event. The extension for items disappearing with no cause can be chosen separately and often has its own maximum and excess. Always report it to the police and notify the loss within the period set out in Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code.
