In brief

Besides the total sum insured, a home contents insurance has a series of sub-limits: separate ceilings for special possessions. Jewellery and watches fall under such a ceiling, and it generally applies to the whole category added together, not per item. So anyone who loses three rings and a watch in a single burglary runs into one limit. The same applies to audiovisual and computer equipment, musical instruments, art and collections.

Above that ceiling, possessions belong on a valuables insurance, with a description and a valuation for each item. A valuation report is more than a price quotation: it fixes the value at the moment of loss, so that argument afterwards falls away. Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code also provides that the payout may not put you in a clearly better position. A valuation prevents you from having to face that argument afterwards.

Conditions are also attached to the sub-limits. Some policies pay for jewellery in full only if it was in a bolted-down safe, or pay only part of the loss away from home. We list your valuables, look at which part fits on the contents policy and which part has to be insured separately, and compare that with the forms of cover you can choose.

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

Basic cover

The basic cover insures the core of your home contents insurance. We show what Nationale-Nederlanden and other insurers offer within it.

  • Fire & lightning strike
  • Storm
  • Possessions away from home
  • Water damage

Extended cover

As well as fire and storm, also water damage, belongings outside the home and, with comprehensive cover, your own accidents.

  • Burglary, theft & vandalism
  • Jewellery & valuables (limited)
  • Machinery & equipment

Comprehensive cover

The most complete cover. We compare Nationale-Nederlanden's extended version with the market.

  • Garden & garden furniture
  • Jewellery & valuables (limited)
  • Glass breakage
  • Higher cover for valuables

A home contents policy has sub-limits: for jewellery, audiovisual equipment and collections a lower limit applies than for the rest of the contents. If your items exceed that, you insure them separately on a valuables policy, usually on the basis of a valuation (7:960 DCC). Underinsurance leads to a proportionately lower payout.

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The ceiling applies to the category, not to each item

A sub-limit for jewellery is a combined maximum. If the whole jewellery drawer is taken in one burglary, payment stops at that amount, even if each individual piece is modest. So make a list with a description and a photograph of each item and add up the value. Only when you know that total can you judge whether the ceiling on your policy is realistic.

Safe clauses and security requirements

Policies regularly tie the highest payment for valuables to a warranty clause: an approved safe, anchored into the floor or wall, or an alarm system. If that is not complied with at the time of the burglary, the payment falls back to a lower amount or is lost altogether. Such clauses are not in the brochure but on the policy schedule, and they are the most commonly overlooked condition in a burglary claim.

A valuation fixes the value in advance

With an item valued in advance, the value is agreed between you and the insurer, usually for a limited period of validity. Without a valuation you have to prove afterwards what the piece was worth, with receipts or certificates that are often missing. For heirlooms, antiques and collections that is the difference between a smooth settlement and an argument in which you have to come out on top.

Different rules apply away from home

A watch that disappears on holiday or a ring that goes missing at work rarely falls under the contents cover. Loss without an identifiable event is excluded as standard, and theft away from home is usually only paid after forced entry or a robbery. A valuables insurance does insure the item away from home, and for many people that is the real reason for taking one out.

Value & stock

Machinery & installations

What does your premium depend on?

  • Value of the valuables. The total of jewellery, watches and equipment determines whether the ceiling on the contents policy is enough.
  • Security fitted. Locks to an approved standard, an anchored safe and an alarm system all count towards the burglary risk.
  • Postcode area. How prone your area is to burglary is one of the heaviest factors in this cover.
  • Type of home and accessibility. A ground floor with rear access weighs differently from a flat with a central entrance.
  • Occupancy during the day. A property standing empty for long periods or frequent absence changes the risk profile of the home.
  • Separate valuations or a sub-limit. Valued items in a separate section are priced differently from a raised ceiling.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is my jewellery automatically insured?

Up to a sub-limit it is, but that ceiling applies to all jewellery and watches together. If what you own in total is worth more, you will receive no more than that maximum after a burglary. The excess belongs on a valuables insurance, where each item has a description and usually a valuation and where cover away from home also applies.

What happens if the safe clause has not been complied with?

The payment then falls back to the lower amount that applies to jewellery not kept in a safe, or the cover for that part is lost. The clause is a condition set in advance, not advice. So check your policy schedule for a warranty clause and check that the safe really is anchored, because under most policy conditions a free-standing safe does not count.

How long does a valuation remain valid?

Valuations are agreed for a limited period and expire after that. Once the period of validity has passed, the value is again established in the ordinary way when you claim and you are back to proving it with receipts and certificates. With gold and gemstones the value may have changed considerably in that period. We therefore record the expiry date on file and warn you in advance.

Do laptops and cameras fall under the same limit?

No, there is usually a separate sub-limit for audiovisual and computer equipment. That too is a category ceiling and not an amount per device. If you use the equipment for business, the exclusion for items with a business purpose also comes into play, and the equipment belongs in a commercial section rather than on the personal contents policy.
