In brief

Most cyber losses in households begin not with a hack but with a transaction. You pay for a second-hand item that never arrives, you transfer money after a message that appears to be from your daughter, or you are led to the wrong account through a copied payment screen. The cyber insurance for private individuals through Turien & Co is aimed at this type of loss: the money is gone and the question is whether it comes back.

The pivotal point is the your own action. With bank fraud, a bank reimburses unauthorised transactions unless you acted with gross negligence by, for example, sharing login details or codes. It is precisely in that grey area, where the bank does not pay out but you did not act deliberately either, that this insurance does its work. That is a different approach from cover mainly offering assistance and restoring systems.

The cyber insurance for private individuals through Ansvar Idea places the emphasis instead on assistance and identity restoration. Which form suits you depends on how you use the internet. We set the two side by side and also look at what your home contents insurance already does.

Independent, personal, sorted quickly

We compare your cyber insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Composition of the household. The number of insured persons who buy and pay online independently.
  • Cover components chosen. Purchase fraud only, or also payment fraud, spoofing and identity misuse.
  • Maximum per event and per year. With financial cover this maximum matters more than with assistance-based cover.
  • Excess per event. Often a fixed amount that effectively keeps small transaction losses outside the cover.
  • Security measures. Two-factor authentication on banking and email feeds through into acceptance and conditions.
  • Claims history. Earlier fraud claims within the household count towards acceptance and the rate.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Purchase fraud calls for evidence of the transaction

Where an item is not delivered or turns out to be counterfeit, the insurer assesses the chain of evidence: the advertisement, the chat conversation, the proof of payment and the police report. If you paid by direct bank transfer rather than through a payment request with protection, that is not an exclusion but it is where the assessment starts. So always keep the complete conversation history and the advertisement, including after it has been taken down.

Spoofing and the friend-in-need message

In deception where the fraudster poses as a bank, a government body or a family member, you make the transfer yourself. Formally that is an authorised transaction, which is why the bank often does not reimburse it. Cover for this is a separate extension with its own maximum and usually a requirement to report to the police and to the bank within a short time. Check whether that extension is in the package chosen.

The boundary with the home contents and liability policies

If your phone is stolen and then used to empty your account, the device sits on the home contents or valuables cover and the financial loss here. If someone in your household causes loss to another person over the internet, that is a liability matter under Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code. Three policies, three roles. We make sure the sections join up so that no gap is left.

What is not covered

Outside the cover are losses on crypto, investment platforms and trading apps, including where these turn out to be fraudulent; transactions connected with your own business or self-employed work; loss after you handed over login codes or a card despite warnings; loss without a police report or without prompt notification to the bank; and gambling-related losses. A missed return or a bargain you did not get is not a loss either.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Does my bank not simply reimburse this?

With an unauthorised transaction, where someone else takes money without your involvement, the bank does reimburse it in principle. If you made the transfer yourself after a misleading message, the transaction is authorised and the bank is not obliged to do so. It is precisely those situations that form the heart of this insurance. Always report to the bank first and make a police report.

What if I buy something that is never delivered?

Then there is purchase fraud, provided you can show that payment was made and that the seller is not delivering or cannot be traced. A dispute about quality or about late delivery is not fraud but a civil matter between buyer and seller. The insurer tests for an intention to deceive, not for disappointment with the product.

Are my children insured as well?

Children living at home generally fall under the family cover, including purchases they make online themselves. For children studying away from home, different age and residence conditions apply per provider. Give full details of the composition of the household, because an insured person who has not been declared is the first point of discussion when a claim arises.

Within what period do I have to report a claim?

As soon as possible, and with financial fraud preferably the same day, because only then do banks still have a chance of recovering the transfer. Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires you to report in good time and to provide all the information the insurer needs. Reporting late may affect the payout if the insurer has been prejudiced as a result.
