Cybercare policy through Turien & Co
A hacked email account or an order that was never sent is not damage to property and not injury. So your home contents or liability insurance does nothing with it.

In brief
Finass acts as intermediary for, among others, the range of the underwriting agency Turien & Co and compares it objectively with more than thirty other companies. Private cyber cover for individuals is a different product from the business version on the cyber insurance hub page. At home it is not about ransomware in a company network, but about four concrete situations: someone buys in your name, someone takes over your account, you pay for a product that never arrives, or your family faces online threats and defamation.
The part people underestimate is the assistance. With identity fraud the loss consists mainly of work: making a police report, writing to debt collectors, having a registration with a credit agency undone, reclaiming accounts from platforms that only have a contact form. A cyber policy arranges for a specialist to take that process over. The financial payout is often limited; the support is the heart of the product.
Look carefully at the boundary with what you already have. Damage to the laptop itself belongs on the home contents insurance, while a legal dispute with an online shop that did deliver but delivered something faulty belongs with the legal expenses insurance. Comparable private cover is also available through Ansvar Idea; the differences lie in the sub-limits and in whether family members at the same address are included.
This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare business cyber insurance.
What to look out for
Four points that determine whether a claim is taken up or refused.
A police report is almost always a condition
With purchase fraud and identity fraud the insurer requires a a report to the police and proof of payment. Without a police report no criminal offence has formally been established and the claim is not handled. Keep screenshots of the advertisement, the chat conversation and the account number you paid into. Afterwards those pages have usually disappeared.
What is structurally outside the cover
Excluded are, among others losses on investments and cryptocurrency, including where a fraudster persuaded you to make that investment; loss through business use of your private equipment, for which business cyber cover is needed; and savings not made or returns not achieved. Loss you cause intentionally yourself is excluded under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code.
Who is insured
Check whether the cover applies to everyone at your home address, including children studying away from home. With online bullying and threats against minors that is the most relevant point in the whole policy: the help then consists of having messages and profiles removed and, where necessary, legal steps against the platform or the perpetrator.
Your own care counts
Insurers expect security updates to be current, a virus scanner to be in place and you not to pass on login details or codes yourself. If you do give a code after a telephone call from a supposed bank employee, the insurer can invoke significant fault (merkelijke schuld). Report an incident immediately: Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires you to report in good time and to cooperate.
What does your premium depend on?
- Composition of the household: a family with children has more accounts and devices
- Sub-limits chosen: per event and per insurance year
- Excess: lowers the premium but bites precisely on small losses
- Sections included: fraud only, or also online reputation and bullying
- Combining with other policies: within a package a different rating often applies
- Term and notice period: continuous or cancellable annually
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
What is covered
| Situation | Cyber policy | Another policy |
|---|---|---|
| You pay in advance for a games console on a marketplace and nothing arrives | Yes | No |
| Your daughter is threatened for months in a group chat and photos are online | Yes | No |
| Ransomware encrypts your laptop and the files have to be restored | Yes | No |
| That same laptop falls off the table and the casing breaks | No | Yes |
| An online shop delivers a washing machine that does not work and refuses to repair it | No | Yes |
| You buy cryptocurrency through a chat contact that turns out not to exist | No | No |
By other policy we mean your home contents or legal expenses insurance (rechtsbijstandverzekering); those two pick up what the cyber cover leaves.
Frequently asked questions
This is what people ask us most.
I paid through a marketplace and received nothing. Do I get that back?
Purchase fraud is generally included up to a separate amount per event, provided you make a police report and can show proof of payment. The insurer assesses whether there was a genuine seller who failed to deliver or a dispute about quality. The latter is a dispute and not fraud, and goes to the legal expenses insurance.
My account has been taken over and orders have been placed in my name. What does the policy do?
Then the assistance service goes into action: recovering the account, having the orders cancelled, stopping debt collection and, where necessary, having an incorrect registration with a credit agency removed. The costs of legal assistance with that are usually included as well. A debt you demonstrably did not take on yourself does not have to be paid; the policy helps you show that.
Does the insurance pay for a broken laptop after a virus?
Cleaning infected equipment and restoring files is often included. If the hardware itself breaks, that is damage to property and belongs with the home contents insurance or, away from home, with valuables or electronics cover. Loss of files for which there was no back-up is not compensated in money.
Is this the same as the cover I need for my sole trader business?
No. A private cyber policy has no cover for business interruption, no liability towards customers whose data leaks and no forensic investigation in a company network. If you work from home on your own account, a business version is needed. That is on the hub page and on the separate page for self-employed professionals.
