In brief
Turien & Co acts as an authorised agent: the policy is issued on behalf of one or more risk carriers, and underwriting and claims handling run through the underwriting agency. For you that mainly means that the conditions document has a number of its own and may differ from the conditions the same insurer uses directly. So compare the conditions document referred to, not the brand name. How such an arrangement works is set out on the page about Turien & Co Assuradeuren; Finass sets this offering alongside that of more than thirty other companies.
With a continuous policy the risk lies in the passage of time. You take it out as a young family and use it ten years later for a trip with two adult children, a son-in-law and a hire car. The description of the insured persons on the policy schedule then determines who has cover: only the family members at the same address, or also family members travelling with you and student children living away from home. If your household changes, tell us; Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code obliges you to give correct information and Article 7:930 DCC attaches consequences to it.
Two limits are often overlooked. The first is the area of cover: Europe, worldwide, or worldwide with certain countries excepted. The second is the maximum uninterrupted length of a trip, which appears on the policy schedule. Anyone planning a sabbatical or a long tour quickly falls outside it and needs an extension or a separate single-trip policy. The main features of the product are set out on the travel insurance product page.
This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare continuous travel insurance.
What to look out for
Four points that make the difference between cover and argument on a continuous travel policy.
Which conditions document applies
On a binding authority policy both the underwriting agent and the risk carrier are named, with their own conditions and clause numbers. A claim is tested against those. So keep that document with your policy and ask after a renewal whether the set has changed; insurers regularly adjust travel conditions on points such as electronics and grounds for cancellation.
Who travels with you and who is insured
Parents travelling with you, a friend of your daughter or a partner not registered at your address are not automatically insured. If someone travels with you who is not on the policy, their medical costs and luggage are not covered and the emergency assistance centre cannot arrange anything for that person. Have the description amended before you book.
Concurrent cover with your home contents policy
Luggage away from home is sometimes partly covered on your home contents insurance as well. With such concurrent cover you are not paid twice: Article 7:961 of the Dutch Civil Code governs the apportionment between insurers. The excess on each policy does determine what is left at the end, so report a claim to the party whose cover is the widest.
What a travel policy never covers
Loss you cause through intent or recklessness is excluded, which ties in with Article 7:952 DCC. Beyond that, the use of alcohol and drugs, taking part in a fight and travel to an area for which negative travel advice applied at the time of departure fall outside the cover. Fines and costs the tour operator already refunds are not paid either.
What does your premium depend on?
- Number of insured persons: family cover is priced differently from a single-person policy
- Area of cover. Europe or worldwide, with or without exceptions
- Maximum length of each trip: longer trips increase the likelihood of medical costs
- Sections chosen: luggage, money, a replacement vehicle, legal assistance while travelling
- Cancellation cover included: calculated on the value of the trips you book each year
- Excess: a higher excess on luggage brings the premium down
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
What is covered
| Situation | Basic | Extended |
|---|---|---|
| Your suitcase does not arrive on the outward journey and you buy necessary clothing locally | Yes | Yes |
| Emergency treatment in a Greek hospital above what your health insurer pays | Yes | Yes |
| Theft of your laptop from the boot during a stopover | Provided that | Yes |
| A collision on the piste in which your skis are damaged beyond repair | No | Provided that |
| You cancel because your employer withdraws your leave a week before departure | No | No |
| The excess the car hire company withholds after a dent in the hire car | No | No |
Which sections you actually have appears from the policy schedule and not from the name of the package.
Frequently asked questions
This is what people ask us most.
Does anything change for me because the policy runs through a binding authority?
Not in the cover: the policy schedule and the conditions determine what is insured. In reality the underwriting agency assesses the application and the claim itself, so decisions are generally reached more quickly. For a complaint you follow the same route as with an insurer: first the underwriting agency and your adviser, then the financial services complaints institute (Kifid) or the courts.
Does my continuous policy apply to a four-month trip?
Only if the maximum uninterrupted trip length on your policy schedule allows it. Many continuous policies assume holidays of a few weeks. If that limit is exceeded, the whole trip is uninsured from the first day, not just the part beyond the limit. So report a long trip in advance. An extension is usually possible for an additional premium.
Is a hire car abroad covered through the travel insurance?
No. Damage to a hire car falls under the contract with the hire company and its excess, or under separate excess insurance. The travel policy does cover the consequences for your trip, such as extra accommodation costs after an accident, and the replacement vehicle section if your own car breaks down on the way.
Can I keep the cancellation cover separate?
Yes. Some households need luggage cover all year but rarely book an expensive trip; separate cancellation cover per booking is then cheaper. Do note that cancellation insurance has to be taken out shortly after booking, usually within a week, otherwise it does not apply to that trip.
