Travel insurance through Klaverblad

In brief
Finass applies for travel policies with Klaverblad and sets them alongside what more than thirty other insurers offer. A travel insurance is built up modular: a basis with assistance, extraordinary costs and luggage, and alongside that separate sections for winter sports, special sports, money and cheques, legal help while travelling, a replacement vehicle and cancellation. What you do not tick is not insured. Whether you arrange that continuously or per trip is explained under the continuous version and the short-term version.
The medical expenses section works as a supplement. Your basic health insurance pays for treatment abroad up to roughly the Dutch rate. The travel insurance tops up the difference and also pays what the health insurance never does: repatriation with medical escort, a family member travelling out, search and rescue, and the transport of your luggage home. On admission or repatriation, always first call the emergency assistance centre. If you arrange it yourself, the insurer does not have to bear the extra costs.
With luggage the sum insured is not the figure that counts. There are sub-limits per category: photographic and film equipment, telephones and laptops, jewellery and watches, glasses and sports gear each have their own maximum, and items older than a year are depreciated. If the value is structurally above that, look at valuables insurance, which also runs at home and all year round.
This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare continuous travel insurance.
What to look out for
Four provisions that determine whether a travel claim is paid.
Winter sports and special sports are separate sections
Without a winter sports module, damage to skis, injury on the piste and the costs of a mountain rescue are not covered. Similarly, diving without certification, climbing, riding a motorcycle on a circuit and taking part in competitions appear as exclusions on virtually every policy. Off-piste use outside the patrolled pistes is named separately; see also travel insurance with winter sports.
Cancelling is a different cover from travelling
The travel insurance starts to work from the moment you depart. Costs you lose because you do not go fall under cancellation cover, which you include or take out separately. It has a closed list of reasons. A condition that was already known when you booked usually falls outside it.
Luggage: unattended, unguarded and unprovable
Three situations keep recurring as grounds for refusal: luggage left unattended behind, valuables lying visibly in a parked car, and loss without a police report or a carrier's statement. Report theft locally to the police or the hotel and keep purchase invoices. Without support for ownership and value, little of the claim remains.
Work, placements and long trips
A personal travel policy covers holidays and private stays. Paid work abroad, certainly manual work or work with machinery, and long work placements usually fall outside it, as does a trip lasting longer than the maximum unbroken trip length on your policy schedule. If you travel for your work, see the continuous business travel insurance.
What does your premium depend on?
- Area of cover. Europe or worldwide cover, with the United States often separate
- Composition of the household: single, cohabiting or a family with children
- Sections chosen: winter sports, special sports, money and legal help
- Sum insured for luggage: and the sub-limits that apply within it
- Excess: usually per event and per section
- Maximum trip length: a policy for long trips costs more than holiday cover
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
What is covered while travelling
| Situation | Basic | Extended |
|---|---|---|
| You break your ankle in Greece and have to travel home with a medical escort | Yes | Yes |
| Your suitcase does not arrive and you buy clothes and toiletries for the first few days | Provided that | Yes |
| Your camera is stolen from the boot while it was lying under a blanket | Provided that | Provided that |
| You curtail the trip because a parent is admitted to hospital in the Netherlands | Provided that | Yes |
| The tour operator goes bankrupt two days before departure | No | No |
| The car hire company keeps the excess after a dent in the hire car | No | Provided that |
With a continuous policy these rows apply all year. With a single-trip policy only for the travel period declared.
Frequently asked questions
This is what people ask us most.
Is the cover through my credit card not enough?
That cover is limited and usually conditional: it often applies only if you paid for the trip with that card, and it focuses on accidents and sometimes cancellation. Extraordinary costs, repatriation and luggage are rarely fully included. Ask for the summary and set it alongside the travel policy before you decide not to insure something.
What happens if I do not call the emergency assistance centre?
You are obliged to report a loss as soon as you are reasonably aware of it. That follows from Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code. For a hospital admission, repatriation or a replacement vehicle the insurer also wants to take part in deciding the approach in advance. If you arrange everything yourself, the risk stays with you that the extra costs are not paid because a cheaper solution was possible.
Are my children who are studying still included?
That depends on how family is defined in the conditions. On many family policies, children studying away from home are included as long as they are unmarried and living away for their studies, but not on every policy and not always when they travel independently. This is one of the points we record expressly when applying, so that no argument arises afterwards.
Why is the damage to my laptop only partly paid?
Because of the combination of three provisions: the sub-limit for electronics, the depreciation on equipment older than a year, and the excess per event. Also Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code applies: a payment must not put you in a clearly better position. For expensive equipment, separate cover therefore often makes more sense than a higher luggage sum.
