In brief

Tailored means three things: the description of business activity matches what you actually do, the sums insured are evidenced and the excesses match what you can carry yourself. It is on those points that standard packages most often come unstuck, not on the premium.

We start with a review: which work do you carry out, under what contracts, how many staff and hired-in workers, what equipment and what stock, and how long can you stand still. From that it follows which covers are needed: liability, business contents and goods, business interruption, legal expenses, sickness absence and vehicles.

Then we test the assumptions. Is the business contents value still right after an investment? Is work abroad included? Does the policy show care, custody and control cover if you work with other people's property? And what stays outside the cover? You would rather hear that in advance than at the first claim.

Insurance that matches your sector

Every sector carries its own risks. We translate those into cover that genuinely fits what you do day to day, rather than a standard package that just happens to apply to your business too.

How a package is put together

Three steps determine what your policies look like.

Step 1

Risk review

Your activities, contracts and possessions determine which covers make sense.

  • Activities and clients' requirements
  • Staff, hired-in workers and subcontracting
  • Equipment, stock and locations
Step 2

Sums and limits

The sums insured and limits are evidenced for each part.

  • Business contents and goods value
  • Limit per claim and per year
  • Indemnity period for business interruption
Step 3

Maintaining the policy

What changes in your business has to change on the policy schedule too.

  • Reporting changes in activities
  • Annual review of the sums
  • Support when you claim

What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive before you take out cover.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Activities: business activity and risk class
  • Turnover and payroll: the basis for many covers
  • Sums insured: business contents, goods, limits
  • Excess: higher risk, lower premium
  • Prevention: security, fire and back-ups
  • Claims history: the number and nature of claims

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

What a tailored approach does and does not solve

Two points that determine whether your package stands up when you claim.

Giving correct information is your own responsibility

We ask the questions, the answers come from you. Under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code you have to disclose, when taking out the policy, everything relevant to the assessment of the risk: activities, claims history, earlier refusals and any criminal record. If that information turns out to be incorrect, the insurer can reduce or refuse the payment (Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code).

A tailored approach moves the limits, it does not erase them

A tailored package still has fixed exclusions. Not covered are intent and wilful recklessness (Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code), fines and penalty payments, wear, deferred maintenance and gradually operating influences, and the redoing or refunding your own work. Contractual liability going further than the law, and loss already in issue when the policy was taken out, also stay outside the cover. Report a claim as soon as reasonably possible (Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code).

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

What do you need from me for a quote?

A description of your activities, the Chamber of Commerce number, the annual turnover and payroll, an indication of the business contents and stock value, and the requirements set by clients or a landlord. If you already have policies, the policy schedules are useful: with them we compare cover and exclusions instead of just the premium.

Can I take out covers separately or does it have to be a package?

Either is possible. A package gives one start date, one policy schedule and usually a package discount. Separate policies give more freedom to switch part by part. More important than the form is that no gap falls between the policies, for instance between liability, care, custody and control and the cover on your equipment.

What happens if my business grows?

Report the change. More turnover, extra staff, new premises or new activities change the risk and therefore the cover. Insurers often work with an adjustment based on actual turnover or payroll. Without a report, a claim may fall outside the insured capacity or above the limit.

Do you also help when I claim?

Yes. We take the notification, check which policy the loss falls under and stay in contact with the claims handler. Always report a loss as soon as possible and gather evidence: photographs, quotations, correspondence and, for theft, a police report. Late notification can adversely affect the handling and the payment.
