A digital nomad is not travelling on holiday but working while travelling, and that word work is precisely the standard exclusion in an ordinary travel and liability policy.

Anyone moving from country to country without a fixed place of residence and working while doing so runs into two design faults. A travel policy assumes a trip from a home base to which you return. That base does not exist. And a personal liability insurance covers you expressly as a private individual, not in the exercise of a profession or business. Neither assumption still holds in a nomadic life.
Health insurance comes on top of that. If you deregister with your local authority, cover under the Health Insurance Act ends by operation of law. If you stay registered while in fact being away all year, the health insurer can establish afterwards that residence was lacking and terminate the policy retroactively. Nomad cover is therefore built as international medical insurance with travel elements, without requiring a home base.
With this type of cover, Finass looks above all at three points: how long you may stay in each country before it counts as settling there, how professional equipment is arranged, and where the line falls between private and professional liability. See also insurance when working abroad.
We work with dozens of insurers and choose whichever fits your situation best — not whichever pays us the most. That means advice built around you, not around one brand.

AdviceThe structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
The basic cover insures the core of your digital nomad insurance. We show what OOM and other insurers offer within it.
On top of that to damage to third parties, employers' and product liability and damage during work at the client's premises.
The most complete cover. We compare OOM's extended version with the market.

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.
We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.
You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.
We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.
We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
A laptop, camera, microphone and external drives are working tools to you, but baggage cover treats them as travel goods with a low maximum per item and often excludes business equipment altogether. What falls outside in any case: loss of files and the cost of recovering them, software failures, and equipment left unattended in a cafe or a shared workspace.
A personal liability insurance covers damage you cause as a private individual, with Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code as its basis. A missed deadline, a bug in code, incorrect advice or a campaign that does not deliver what was promised is professional liability and falls entirely outside it. Pure financial loss suffered by a client is, moreover, a separate category for which you need professional indemnity insurance (BAV) or public and employers' liability insurance (AVB).
Without cover under the Health Insurance Act, international medical cover is your only safety net, which makes how it is put together more important than the price. Look at the division into country groups in which the United States and Canada stand apart, at waiting periods at the start of the term, and at the provision that you may not stay in any one country longer than a set period without the insurer treating it as settling there.
Cover does not extend to visa requirements and work permits, your tax domicile, cyber risks and data breaches at clients, or the loss of your income if illness stops you working. The last of these is disability and belongs in a provision of its own; no travel or medical cover tops up your turnover during a period in which you cannot invoice.
Retroactive cover (prior risk) Included for your staff during work.
This is what people ask us most.
Only if you genuinely remain a resident. If you deregister, cover under the Health Insurance Act ends by operation of law. If you stay registered at an address where you do not live, you run the risk that the insurer terminates the policy afterwards and reclaims what it has paid. Basic health insurance also pays for foreign care only up to the Dutch tariff.
Not automatically. Equipment you use for your work falls under an exclusion for business items in many baggage covers, and otherwise under a low maximum per item. Loss of your files and the cost of recovering data are never covered. If you really want the equipment insured, that is a separate module.
No. Personal liability cover stops where your professional practice begins. A mistake in an assignment, a missed delivery or loss suffered by a client because your work was not up to standard falls under professional liability. If you work for clients who pay attention to this, you need separate business cover for it.
You then run into the residence provision. Most international policies state a maximum uninterrupted period per country. If you stay longer, the insurer sees that as settling there and cover can end at that point. Report it in advance if a stay overruns, so that the term or the area of cover can be adjusted.
Every situation is different. For these situations we have a separate page.
