Voluntary work is unpaid but it is still work, and work activities are precisely the standard exclusion in an ordinary travel policy.

A construction project, farming, care work, teaching or nature conservation involves physical labour: tools, ladders, scaffolding, machinery, animals, and often a location far from a hospital. Travel policies exclude manual labour and work with machinery as standard unless it has been notified and accepted in advance. The fact that you are not paid for it makes no difference. The insurer looks at the nature of the activity, not at the reward.
Above that lies the position of the sending organisation. Article 7:658(4) of the Dutch Civil Code extends employer's liability to persons who perform work outside an employment relationship in the course of another party's business, and Article 6:170 DCC places damage caused by a subordinate to third parties with the party under whose authority the work was done. The organisation's policy and your own cover must fit together, otherwise each will point to the other.
Finass therefore first assesses what exactly you are going to do and where, and only then which policy fits. For travel without a work component, the range under insurance for travelling.
We work with dozens of insurers and choose whichever fits your situation best — not whichever pays us the most. That means advice built around you, not around one brand.

AdviceThe structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
The basic cover insures the core of your insurance for volunteers abroad. We show what OOM and other insurers offer within it.
On top of that to damage to third parties, employers' and product liability and damage during work at the client's premises.
The most complete cover. We compare OOM's extended version with the market.

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.
We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.
You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.
We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.
We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
Describe specifically what you are going to do: bricklaying, carpentry, roofing, caring for animals, teaching, nursing. Manual labour, working at height and working with machinery fall outside cover if not notified. If you are injured during that work, it is an excluded event and not only the reimbursement of medical costs lapses but also any payment under personal accident cover.
The largest cost item is rarely the treatment but the transport to it: over unpaved roads, by boat or by helicopter to a town with a suitable hospital, sometimes across the border. Make sure the emergency assistance centre can give authorisation in advance and that medical evacuation to a neighbouring country is expressly covered, because local facilities are not always adequate.
Policies exclude loss or injury arising in areas subject to orange or red travel advice from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and events caused by acts of war, insurrection and terrorism. If the advice changes while you are already there, a short period generally applies within which you can leave with cover intact. If you then stay on, cover lapses for everything that happens afterwards.
Damage to the building you are working on or to borrowed tools falls under care, custody and control and is often excluded under personal liability cover. Medical or nursing acts by someone not locally qualified to perform them fall outside all cover, however well intended. Damage caused by driving a vehicle without a valid licence for that category is also excluded.
Retroactive cover (prior risk) Included for your staff during work.
This is what people ask us most.
Yes. An insurer looks at what you actually do, not at what you get in return. Bricklaying, roofing or operating machinery is manual labour, whether the reward is wages or a bed and three meals. Report the work in advance and have it recorded that it has been accepted; otherwise an accident during the work is not covered.
You are usually given a short period to leave the area with cover intact. That period is stated in the conditions. If you then stay on, cover lapses for everything that happens afterwards, including evacuation. Follow the advice of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and contact the emergency assistance centre as soon as advice changes.
Only if the work has been notified and insured in advance. Without that notification, working with tools, at height or with machinery is an excluded activity, and both the reimbursement of medical costs and the personal accident benefit fall away. Also ask the sending organisation what cover it has arranged for volunteers itself.
Often in part. Many organisations have group cover, but it is frequently limited to personal accident and liability during the project activities. Travel days, free weekends, baggage and care outside the project then fall outside it. Ask for their policy schedule, set it alongside your own cover and top up only what is genuinely missing.
Every situation is different. For these situations we have a separate page.
